Closed 39 restaurants in 2017, also lost $10.6 million in a data breach in 2016.
Now, that one is defunct; last one closed in 2017: Whatever Happened to Howard Johnson's Restaurants? | Kiplinger

I don’t know about “dying out” but they’re definitely in decline. Closed almost 2000 storefronts in the past couple of years. Granted, they’ve got over 25,000 stores, but still, 2000 stores is a very large drop out of a very large bucket. They’re overextended at the very least.
They seem to be doing well enough in the south suburbs of Chicago.

In 2017, Joe’s Crab Shack filed for bankruptcy. 112 locations existed before bankruptcy; now the site lists 58.
I have to question this one - The category is Fast Food - which Joe’s Crab Shack was not.
ekedolphin - What say you? You started this one.
If that’s the case, then you also have to question Steak & Shake, Boston Market, etc. Without a clear definition of what constitutes fast food and what doesn’t, we could argue about most of the items on the list.

I will defend Steak 'n Shake - it has a drive thru.
And I’ll defend Boston Market. The food is already cooked when you arrive and you go up and order it at a counter. I feel it’s clearly a fast food restaurant.

I ate at the last one left in the country a couple of weeks ago.

By that standard, would you consider buffets fast food?
