Food pref change so extreme I feel bodysnatched

Ever since I was a very very small child, 50 years ago, I have LOVED toast. And I have LOVED my toast to be nearly burned…dark dark dark dark dark.

I also love my toast with as much butter as it could hold, just drenched.

Well, in just the last month or so I’ve suddenly found myself preferring my toast just barely toasted, with just a light swipe of butter. Preferring it. I nearly fell over in shock the other day when I took a bite of the toast and recoiled because there I felt there was too much butter when I had put a very normal amount on.

I’VE BEEN BODYSNATCHED!

Completely serious, here… Might it be menopause? 50+ is a bit late for it, but I can see major hormonal changes maybe causing something like that.

Menopause was my first thought too. Stoid, have you recently begun or quit some prescription medication or something else you have been ingesting regularly for years? Decided to cut back on coffee or some such?

Huh? 50+ is late for menopause? Somebody better tell my 52-year-old self.

I think that just happens sometimes. I went for about a year when I could not bear the thought of eating anything tomato-based. No spaghetti, no pizza. It went away as fast as it came much to my husband’s delight.

Agreed. I’m 32 - nowhere near menopause - and my tastes have changed a lot in the last ten years. More specifically, in just the last couple years, my sweet tooth has lessened a great deal. I still enjoy dessert, but for the first time in my life, I have started finding things that I had previously enjoyed too sweet.

I’m 65, and have been experiencing the same thing . . . and also savory foods that I’ve always loved are now too salty. I remember my mother always commenting that something was too sweet or too salty or too sour, or too spicy . . . and now I’m agreeing with her.

My father was exactly the opposite. He was gradually losing his sense of taste, so was always complaining that everything was too bland.
