Foods that have gone away...

After the hilarious “New Coke” fiasco of the mid-80s, they brought back Coke as “Coke Classic”. A few years later (or possibly it was around the whole time), they re-introduced “New Coke” as “Coke 2”. I had some in…probably 1992 or 1993 or thereabouts. At the time I didn’t realize it was the same thing as New Coke. Anyway, I haven’t seen it for years, but I’ve heard a few recent references, so maybe certain local bottlers still produce it. Just look for Coke 2.

I bought some spagettios with meatballs at my local Price Chopper last night. They were a different shape from what I remember tho, and the meatballs were smaller.

Anyone know where I can find a Chocodile? Anyone know what that is?

My personal favorites:

Screaming Yellow Zonkers - best boxed popcorn snack ever to find its way to this planet. Great packaging, too. Who in their right mind would sell popcorn in a black box? I think the last time I saw ‘Zonkers’ in a store was about 15 years ago.

Gorilla Milk - powdered chocolate milk mix that was around sometime in the early 1960’s (offered in a small number of other flavors, too). No better than any other flavored powder, I suppose, but if the new Planet of the Apes movie goes over big, the name alone ought to mark this product as a top candidate for a 21st century comeback.

Coca-cola IN BOTTLES - yeah, I know sometimes they put bottles of Coke out for special occasions, but I miss bottled Coke when there IS no special occasion.

OK, so none of these are likely to be high on anyone’s list of what constitutes a FOOD item, but I’m hoping there’s room for a snackfood subcategory in this thread…

I miss cinnamon-hazelnut coffee creamer. Now all they have is hazelnut flavour, and to me it tastes like dust.

I liked the McRib at McDonalds. So sue me.

I remember shakey pudding, I think my mom still has one of the pudding shakers in her ‘cupboard of various plastic-y things which may one day have a use’.

Oh man, I liked koogle. I haven’t had this stuff in 28 years but oh man did it make an impression on me. Moreso than my parents’ divorce later that year.

Something that i haven’t seen in a good long time that I’m very glad of - strawberry flavoured Quik. Bleahhhh!!

Boston Creme Pie Mix (Betty Crocker, I think)
My favorite dessert my entire life, the boxed mix had a filling that just blew away any scratch cake I’ve ever tasted. They started getting scarce in Kentucky in the 80s. In '86 in a grocery store with the 16 yo daughter of the woman I was dating at the time, I found 14. I bought 13 of them, leaving one so they’d know what to restock. Kelly wouldn’t go through the checkout line with me (you know how 16 yo’s can be about appearances). Then in the 90s, my sister bought me a carton of them for my birthday. Shortly after that, they were discontinued. I kept them in the freezer, rationing them out about two a year, but even frozen they have a shelf life of about 4-5 years. My life will now be forever incomplete. :frowning:

Sara Lee Frozen Brownies
Packaged in an aluminum tub with a cardboard lid, they were a heavy chocolate cake with nuts, covered in a gooey choclate frozting, and were fantastic straight out of the freezer. I miss them somewhat, but my mom, the Original Chocoholic, would probably kill for them.

Ooh, ooh, my Mom used to make something like this when I was a kid. It was called Spoon Candy I think and the topping was separate. It hardened up on top of the pudding kind of like Magic Shell does on ice cream. Scrummy. My Mom bought these through a shop-at-home grocery service someone was trying out back in the 70s.
Ha! My Memory Still Works

OMG, I’ve never known anyone who’d even heard of Team Flakes before. When I saw this thread title, those are exactly what I came in here to post about! I was so upset when they took them off the market. It was the best cereal ever, because they were made with a combination of corn, rice, oats and wheat, so they stayed super crunchy right down to the bottom of the bowl. Oh how I miss my Team Flakes. <sigh>

Jeg elsker dig, Thomas

Fruit Slush.

Not really a classic; more like an '80s fad-food. It was basically a sno-cone in a yogurt carton–fruit flavored liquid mixed with finely crushed ice. It was absolutely delicious though. I still have my official Fruit Slush spoon, with the logo printed on the handle.

When I was little, we used to get these little (about 2" in diameter) cinnamon-sugar doughnuts frozen. Warm them in the oven, and Voila’ — fresh, hot doughnuts. I haven’t seen them in the frozen foods aisle for years (which is probably just as well, or I would probably weigh about 800 pounds by now.)

I still get my little cinnamon-sugar doughnut fix once a year, though, as one of the vendors at the NC State fair has a booth where they sell them the tiny doughnuts (with your choice of topping). They’re called Little Orbits.

And you thought the only reason to go to the State Fair was to see the racing pigs, the world’s largest horse, and Decapitated Donna…

Qadgop: I remember the space food sticks. The caramel ones weren’t too awful. They were just not quite good, but we asked Mom to get them anyway, because it was cool to open the individually sealed packages and eat a tube of space food…

wow screaming yellow zonkers I haven’t thought about those in years. But what I really miss was those pizza flavored chips made by keebler. They were called pizzarias I think, man they were great

Crystal Pepsi, anyone?

Target carries Frankenberry and Count Chocula!!!

Over in the cereal thread, I waxed nostalgic about the joys of a cereal called Ruskets, but here I’d like to add a few bits of my past…

FIZZIES! An early 60s kiddie delight - drop 'em in water to make your own fizzy poplike substance. Available in grape, orange, etc. Much fun.

Not long after, there was a similar product that purported to clean your teeth so that you didn’t have to brush anymore. Don’t remember the name, but dentists hated it and it died a quick death.

PORTLAND PUNCH - loganberry flavored fruit base that you’d mix with water for a wonderful punch. It made a brief reappearance in a regional grocery chain (Fred Meyer, a Northwest-based outfit acquired by Kroger’s a couple of years back) about four years ago, but was gone after a year or so. Wonderful stuff.

I miss very little Cold War food, but there’s one thing that I miss: the extra-hard, jaw-muscle-straining Bit-O-Honeys. They’ve softened them up now, and they’re unpalatable.

I want a workout with my honey-almond snacks, dammit!

Whatever happened to Chew-Chew cookies?

I think they were made by Weston’s in Toronto. Imagine: a light wafer cookie topped by caramel, the whole surrounded by chocolate, with toasted coconut on top, and lines of chocolate drizzled on top. Yum!

We always called them “Croc-o-Chous” because that was what the French side of the bag named them.

Weston’s also made good shortbread cookies with chocolate underneath…
“Cold War food”??

there used to be some jumbo marshmallows covered with toasted coconut. I dont remember their name though.

We still have them up here in Québec, but they’re more a convenience store item.

Cherry Pop Tarts.

Damn Kellogg’s!

Mobius74, they always have Coke in glass bottles in the stores around here. Sell them in 6 pack boxes just like always.

We still have Spagettios with meatballs. I have them about twice a year.

I did find out that for those of you that miss the cereal Quisp it is still available but apparently only on line…I could be wrong as I don’t eat cereal but I remember this stuff as a kid.

http://www.quisp.com/

I had a problem with the pictures loading but if you hover over the far most left and center region it will take you to the buy section and it will forward you to netgrocer.

I don’t know anything about netgrocer, so if you buy and it’s 20 year old cereal, don’t yell at me as I only report what I see. < snicker >

As for me, I miss Mug-O-Lunch…I liked all the flavors but their Macaroni and Cheese was my favorite. I probably wouldn’t like it as much as an adult as I did as a kid but I still miss those quick after school, in a cup, snacks.

techchick68: if you click on the Where am I link, they list some local areas where Quisp is available, including Albertson’s in Denver Colorado (You’re in CO, right?).

Hometownboy: Fizzies are back.

Planman: Droxies are still around too, at least in the Philadelphia area.

Mobius74: Coke in the classic “Coke-Bottle” shaped bottles is still available in some areas - depending on the bottling plant I guess. I picked up a case a couple of years ago for nostalgia’s sake. It really is great in glass, but it was a lot more expensive than buying it in cans at the grocery store…
