Well, the sore foot I’ve had for the last 6 months was a broken lateral sesamoid bone. It’s broken in several places. After 8 weeks in a boot and no improvement (although it’s probably my fault for walking on it for 6 months before I sought treatment) I’ve been told I have to have surgery to remove the bone. I have no idea what the recovery will entail, but I understand ice cream is involved. I don’t know what I did to shatter it, that bone is on the bottom of your foot.
sigh I shouldn’t be so stubborn. I just kept thinking if I could tough it out it would heal itself.

Ouch!!!
Any chance a second opinion might yield alternative treatments? pinning or something?
Missed edit but have they tried keeping you off the foot entirely as suggested here?.
I’ve had sesamoiditis, though no fractures… so far.
I think they “completely immobilized” they’re referring to is the knee-high boot I’ve been wearing. I was very compliant with the boot-wearing, mostly because it removed most of the pain. Try doing farm chores and chasing loose ponies in a boot! I calculated that in the eight weeks I’ve been in the boot, I’ve carried 2400 lbs of wood pellets, 400 lbs of dog food and 200 lbs of horse feed.
I feel pretty confidant in the surgeon I’m seeing. The first guy I saw was an orthopedic foot guy, and he referred me to the surgeon. They’ve done an MRI and saw multiple fractures. The good news is my toes are nice and straight and I have no arthritis (yet) in my foot. Hopefully even after the bone is removed the fact that my feet are in good shape will help down the road.

I had my foot surgery today, and I don’t like crutches. How are you supposed to carry anything?
The surgery went well, the doctor said beforehand that the bone just seemed to have disintegrated, and that it wouldn’t have mattered if I had gone to the doctor immediately, the surgery would still need to have been performed.
