I recall seeing a PAT attempt where the snap was fumbled and the holder tossed it up into the endzone where it was caught by Mike Wells. 2 points were awarded.
They don’t have cheerleaders now, but they were supposedly the first team to have cheerleaders.
Well, I’ll be. I had no idea.
Ok, they’ve never had cheerleaders in MY lifetime
August 6, 1960, the first preseason game for the then L.A. Chargers against the New York Titans (now Jets) - Paul Lowe returns the opening kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown on the very first play in Chargers history. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on the other hand, did not have a single kickoff return for a touchdown in the entire history of the team (in the regular season) until 2007, apparently on their 1,865th try (if Wikipedia is to be believed).
I’m curious too. I did find a game from Nov 10, 1968, where Oakland had the first three scores in the first quarter:
Warren Wells 17 yd pass from George Blanda (George Blanda kick)
Safety, Floyd Little tackled in end zone
George Blanda 42 yd. FG
Floyd Little was running back and kick returner, so it is possible that he had the safety on the kickoff.
A returner who fields the ball in his own endzone can run around all he wants, step out of bounds or get tackled, it cannot be a safety if he never leaves the endzone.
Nope, the very first 2 pt conversion was on a fake kick.
The Tennessee Titans/Houston Oilers have had four different occasions where a kicker has made 20 straight field goals – Al Del Greco once, Rob Bironas thrice. The 21st FG was missed all four times.
Right. A safety can only occur if the ball has entered the end zone by the impetus of the offense.
The Chicago Bears’ all-time leading passer (based on career passing yards) is a quarterback who retired in 1950 (Sid Luckman).
The Bears’ all-time leading receiver (based on career receiving yards) is a flanker who retired in 1967 (Johnny Morris).
The Green Bay Packers have never been in my kitchen.
A group of Redskins receivers nicknamed “The Fun Bunch” for their choreographed celebratory hijinks were responsible for the NFL’s leaguewide ban on touchdown celebrations.
Technically, that is true.
The Oakland/Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders have the most victories of the original eight AFL teams through the 2012 season: 430 regular season and 455 including playoffs.
The New York (New Jersey:p) Titans/Jets have the worst: 365/377.
The Miami Dolphins (an expansion team in 1966) has more victories 407/427 than NY, Buffalo Bills 370/384, Houston Oilers/ Tennessee Titans 392/406, LA/San Diego Chargers 399/409 and Dallas Texans/ Kansas City Chiefs 404/412.
Boston/New England Patriots are second with 426/450 and the Denver Broncos are third with 419/437.
