Yes. Biggest risk, I may occasionally get bored and lonely, but for 1 million dollars, I think I can take it.
Wasn’t there a short story about a guy who dared another guy to spend 40 years without human contact?

In a friggin’ heartbeat. Amazon would be my new best friend, and the UPS man would be kept extra busy (I know, I won’t see him, but that’s okay because my dog hates him). Internet, books, ipod, my animals, being able to get all the sleep I want…sign me up! Forget the million, just keep my Amazon, ebay, and iTunes bills paid, and I’ll be a happy camper.
oh, ya, you betcha. the fur faces and i await the contract.
Mentioned Skald’s scenario to my wife this morning – she’s quite keen to get her own $1million if the Billionaire is offering. (And thinking it would give her time and funds to build a really big 40k Ork army).
I got my application materials in the mail and I am almost done.
However, I am having trouble with question 33A.
What video game platform do you prefer?
Is it OK if I select all of them or do I just have to choose one?
The food and drink menu is impressive I must say. I am going to need some time selecting all the options but I am sure others are going through the same thing right now.
The thing that sucks most about this isn’t being in spoiled isolation, it is waiting until October 15th which is my scheduled start date.
Really, the contact part isn’t ALL that different from my real life.
Get theose dogs & cats completely vet checked and a year’s worth of meds I might need-heartworm pills, Pepto, Imodium AD, etc and HELL YES… me and the critters are ready!
I could spend time writing and painting, and I’d have a REAL TV instead of the sorry excuse I have now with the *^^@!!! converter box.
When do we start?
I do it too. I’d make sure the money was put into some legal trust before I started. I don’t want it to go down like that Twilight Zone episode with the guy who wasn’t allowed to talk for a year.
It’d be difficult and I’d miss my fiance, but on that money I’d be able to not worry about working again. I’d counting the $240K total of the monthly I’d be able to pay off the mortgage and have the million still. I’d have to live wisely but would have pretty good spending money.
I think if the yard was bigger, there was room for a bmx track, and a downhill section, and some woods to muck about in, then maybe.
A month like this would be easy, maybe even 3 months would be easy, with all the books, games and TV I could fit in.
What’s the consensus on illegal drugs? Will the billionaire fund that?
There are days I’d pay the eccentric billionaire a $1,000,000 to live under those conditions for a year!
I’m in. Why not? I’m basically alone out here in the suburbs anyway. “People” have never done a damn thing for me and I, no joke, expect in my old age to be found dead someday by the mailman, eaten by cats. The relatives I have are all miserable and damaged and only call me when they want something - money, rides to the doctor for medical tests, wait while they have surgery, take them here, take them there, pick them up, drop them off. Friends? All moved down South to get jobs. or they’re dating, or trying to date, and spend all their time with their new SOs or in bars trying to find SOs. Or they have some horrible problems just like the relatives. Screw 'em. I am happy with myself. As long as I have the TV, DVDs, the internet, and lots of pets - SIGN ME UP!
Shit! I’d forgo human contact for the rest of my life under those conditions. Just let me have my own CDS and books.
hell yes!
Since I have never lived north of the Mason-Dixon line, cold weather issues didn’t even occur to me.
I love those days! Too cold to go out means staying in your pajamas all day without feeling guilty – turn up the heat and make hot chocolate. Good times.
I gotta pay for the heat!
Although now there’s another level to it. In the apartment I was living in I didn’t have a programmable thermostat; now I do. Maybe it would be better to come home to the house already warmed up.
Still don’t want to do it, though. I’d do it for a month, though, and run with the $20K. That’s about as much as I could handle.
Skald, I have lived in your neck of the woods - well, Tennessee - and I have lived a couple of months in India, so I have some idea of what living in eternally warm weather would be like. But cold makes this kind of situation worse. This I know from experience.
I don’t think it would be easy, at least not all the time, but for a million dollars I’d absolutely do it. Me, my cats, lots of games and movies and books, my guitar, a garden in the back, and a bunch of beer, cigars, and whisky; I’ll be just fine for a year.
If you upped the term significantly I probably wouldn’t do it though, even if you raised the money exponentially. 1 year for a million dollars, sure thing. 3 years for 10 million? That would be tough, I don’t know if I’d last but I’d try. 10 years for a billion? No way. I just couldn’t, I’d be completely broken well before the term was up.
Count me in too. As long as I have TV, my Netflix subscription, unlimited books, art supplies, my food choices and maybe a bike to ride around the property for sunshine and exercise, I’d be good.
I’m old enough that at the end of the year, the $1 million could last me for the rest of my life so basically I could just keep doing the same thing forever.
See, I’d have to be doing it in a place that had four or six seasons, like here. I could get through the cold (which I kind of enjoy) knowing the progression into spring was coming. Doing it in a place where the outside never changed by much would be a lot more difficult.
I’d just need to let my wife and kids know what was going on.
Move some necessary items onto the property and lock the gate.

I’m guessing that it would be allowed, but I’ll ask anyway. Ordering online from Amazon or other stores is acceptable?
I wouldn’t think twice about it.I definitely do it.
