For anime fans: your fav. theme song

Everytime I see your name, I imagine the summoning ceremony, all quiet and solemn, then Togepi popping up with a big ol’ “Chokkee-bree!” And then giant Togepi battles it out with Suzaku and Seiryuu, trashing Tokyo in the process…

So what’s everybody’s opinion of the various covers of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ as the Evangelion closer?

They were ok. I have friends who couldn’t stand them though. Fly Me to the Moon is a kinda funny song to me, since the first time I ever heard it was Paul McDermott and some other guy I can’t remember the name of singing it to each other on Good News Week.

P.S. Last time I forgot to thank Togepi for posting this thread and reminding me I wanted to get Cruel Angel’s Thesis from Napster. If only I could speak Japanese so I could sing along with it… le sigh.

You need to know how to speak Japanese to sing along with anime songs? I knew I was hooked on NGE when I started going around the house singing “Zankoku na tenshi no youni…shounen, no shinwa ni nare…” I would have no idea what those words meant if the songs weren’t translated on the tapes.

Alternatively, you could do what one of my friends in college liked to do: Sing the “Yappappa” song from Ranma…but use Viz’s English translation. “Yappappa, yappappa, don’t know what to do, my heart is not a game, it’s mah-jongg to you”, and so on. I was amazed when I got my Ranma OAV DVD box set this Christmas and I discovered that they actually did have English versions of some of the songs. The singers just sang Viz’s translation, just like my friend did.

I like Through the Night from outlaw star and Datte Daisuke from teshi ni narumon. Also duvet from lain and 7:oo news from childs toy.

oops didnt mean to make the face…I need sleep!

Hmm, I forgot one: Explosion from Project A-Ko. One of the coolest instrumental pieces I’ve ever heard, and I liked it so much I ended up buying the soundtrack.

Ok, well the best anime theme ever has to be Flying Kids the theme to You’re Under Arrest TV (with a close second bing the Origional Mazinger Z theme). The song reminds me of Billy Joel only in Japanese and is too cool for words. As for the worst theme ever I’m not sure if it’s Boogiepop Phantom or Hard Rock Saves the Space, both are really awful.

I almost forgot ALL the themes for the origional Bubblegum Crisis (a Different one each episode) are fantastic even if they are cheezy 80’s rock.

I also forgot about the cowboy Bebop soundtack!!! NOOOO!! There are just to many good anime theme’s to pick from!!! What about Kiseki No Umi form Lodoss TV, or Actress in the Mirror from KOR, or Happy B-day from Nuku Nuku Dash, or Succesful Mission from Saber Marionette J, or 7:00 News from Kadocha, or that wierd Yanni sounding thing from Jubei-Chan, or You May Dream(not sure if that’s the title) from KKnJ, or Duvet from Lain, or or or… <Thump> <passes out from confusion>

It’s hard enough catching the words of songs in English right when I know what to expect.

Heh, you have my sympathies. I have 3 CD compilations (made by moi) with a fourth on the way. All great stuff.

Viz in pretty good in that regard – almost all of their translated lyrics, as far as I can recall, scan reasonably well to the original tunes. Witness the “silly blimp” song sung by Shampoo’s voice actress at the end of whatever season it was’s episodes.

Well, I cited these three, and I wasn’t even the first for Duvet…

Some might say that they’re pretty bad in that regard. (I like it.)

Cruel Angel’s Thesis also works pretty well, although the 4th verse is a little awkward.

You Know from Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. I’m also partial to the one from Revolutionary Girl Utena. I’ve only recently started watching anime with Hamish, and it’s cool to see that other people have mentioned these!

I just meant that I hadn’t mentioned them the first time. I also mentioned the Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack. Which a ton of people brought up. I also refrenced the origional Bubblegum Crisis Themes of which you mentioned “Konya wa Hurricane” which is a really great one (Except in the Dub). Speaking of the BGC dub and how bad the songs are reminds me; the dub of Hey Mr. Dandy from the BGC first episode closing is absolutely horrendous. It’s not just bad. It’s Mortal Combat 2 (The Movie not the game. I just can’t spell Annili…annilh…annile…awww screw it.) bad.

ONeDollarWilliam: you mean the opening theme for Jubei-chan? Or the one at thend where everyone is on a bike? “sweet dreams and memories, together, forever”. Nice to see another Jubei-chan fan (do you watch it dubbed or subbed?)

–It’s in my room. In the garbage.

Anybody know when Jubei-chan is coming out as a DVD box set? I saw the first couple eps at Anime Expo, but refuse to buy any series until it’s a box set. Even Rurouni Kenshin…

You refuse to buy anything unless it’s a box set? But what if you turn out not to like it? I’d like to know of a place to buy anime where you can bring it back if you hate it. Software etc. is very nice about this with their video games, why can’t they do this for anime?

They change some anime series’ songs every season, but not others. Why not/ And what about the eyecatches/ If a show runs more than one season it seems like they’ll change it for the second season, but then never again (see ranma 1/2). Fushigi Yugi changes partway through, but that makes sense, considering the tome is getting more serious.

–Hold on to the dream, you never know where or when, it’s true what you believe, don’t let go, the road will never
end…

I should amend that. I’ll rent or otherwise appropriate - download, borrow from friends, etc. - before buying. But as I hate cliffhangers and hate seeing a box set come out a week after I buy the last tape/DVD in a series, I’ll put off watching a series until everything’s out on DVD and nicely boxed for my convenience.
