For Better or Worse 10-21-07

I’m surprised that Johnston decided to rerun this strip.

I’m not terribly surprised.

I don’t think I can articulate why I feel that way, but at least it will give us a disagreement on which to continue the discussion.

Heh, I actually kinda like that comic. My girlfriend occasionally wakes up angry at me for cheating on her in her dreams. So I feel for Mr. FBOFW (John? I forget his name), as I’m sometimes in the same surreal position of apologizing for what the subconscious version of myself does in someone else’s brain.

Maybe you’re unfamiliar with the new context since it was first written. Lynn Johnston’s real life husband, Rod Johnston, did in fact leave Lynn for another woman six months ago.

My wild-ass guess is this is an in-joke burn on the ex.

I can’t stand these “hybrid” strips to begin with. That first panel (set in the modern world) makes no sense. Either she has the dream all the time (so John wouldn’t say, “You have the memory of an elephant!” since she probably had the dream last week) or she hasn’t had the dream for 20 years and John would say, “What dream was that?” unless he has “the memory of an elephant” as well!

At least the “modern” panel didn’t feature Mike and Meredith looking through photo albums. “One day, your grandmother had this dream…”

Yeah, I think this strip was chosen deliberately, and seems to be in poor taste. Why drag your dirty laundry into the funny papers? I bet Rod saw it and was glad to be rid of her.

I found it a bit sad and quite a bit spooky. I understand she’s upset, but I hope we don’t see her break down right in front of our eyes.

Man, this is cutting too close. I don’t really want to be privy to the agony. I guess she’s decided that the strip never backed away from the tough moments of life, and it’s not gonna start now.
