Well, since Elizabeth is supposed to be based on Johnston’s own daughter, I can’t see her being killed or seriously injured.
And while I agree that the Death of Farley strips were mighty week, they were necessary because the Johnstons’ real dog, the one Farley was based on, really died! Johnston just gave the fictional dog a much more spectacular sendoff than the real one got.
So, I guess there’s no hope for Elizabeth being blown to pieces by a couple of rednecks in a pickup truck?
Prolly not. And I bet we don’t get to see a demonically-possessed tricked-out '60’s Continental with blacked-out windows run her into a canyon, either.
More’s the pity, really…the strip could use some real drama.
Well, the week before last had Liz telling a much-disappointed April that she won’t be legally allowed to carry passengers. So we can rule that one out…unless Lynn decides to go for the VSE in a roundabout way? Like, “Motorcycles are safe, as long as you follow every single safety rule But Liz didn’t, so let that be a lesson to you!”
And winterhawk, I’m with you. Motorcycles are as bad as guns when it comes to that kind of heavy-handed, only-bad-things-can-happen sermonizing.
Though if it’ll make you feel better, I can give one example of that not happening. A few seasons ago on That '70s Show, Eric’s dad, Red, bought a motorcycle. Kitty (mom) was very much against it, so Red agreed to sell it, but insisted on one ride with Kitty before doing that. Mr. Rilch’s and my stomachs were lead as we watched them pull out of the driveway. Cut to another storyline, and all through the scene, we were convinced that the episode was going to end with flashing emergency lights.
Instead, they came back gleefully picking the bugs out of their teeth. Kitty was over the moon! She loved the bike! What a rush! Especially for a nurse and mother of two and mother hen to her son’s friends, who’s always preaching safety! Fun doesn’t have to be boring!
So they were going to keep it. Only thing is, it was never mentioned again. Which I still can’t understand, being as they’ve made ongoing references to Red’s vintage car. But at least the show upheld its no-Very-Special-Episodes policy.
Another example of nobody getting hurt on a motorcycle in entertainment: an entire season or two of Roseanne. For a while, Dan and Roseanne owned a motorcycle shop.
If anything does happen, she’ll abandon the storyline for a more innane one (like April and her band) for a couple of months.
hehe…I wonder which strip gets talked about more here, FBoFW or BC?
Imagine if each artist kept drawing but let the other one write their strips? The Johnson family becomes staunch Christian right-wingers who talk to clams while the BC crowd gets together for comfort sessions and hugs.
