If it has bare breasts in it, it’s romantic enough.
Meanwhile, across the hall, the very skinny daughter of the landlord is crying her little eyes out.
Ladyhawk, the scene in the pit where the two cursed people see each other for the first time since they’ve been cursed.
In Titanic, when the old couple hug each other in bed as the water washes over them. (Not that the stuff with Rose and Jack wasn’t romantic… man I love that movie.)
Excellent scene in a great movie.
One of my favorites, from John Sayles’ Lone Star, contains a big plot spoiler, so i’ll hide it:
Near the end of the movie, where Sam and Pilar (Chris Cooper and Elizabeth Peña, respectively) find out that they are half brother and sister, and decide that it doesn’t matter.
Dustin Hoffman’s Ben banging on the church balcony window glass while yelling “Elaine” and Katherin Ross’ Elaine yelling “Ben” as she leaves her recently-added but unconsummated husband on the altar, and then their eloping at the back of the bus to “The Sounds of Silence”.
In The Village the scene where Lucius is on the porch with Ivy at night, and she probes him about why he’s so silent… I thought his response was incredibly heartfelt, genuine and extremely romantic.
Nice pick! One I’d forgotten, thank you.
My choices would be: Jenny and Jack in “Liar’s Moon” when she drives up to see him, the background music being “You Came Along.”
At the end of “Ocean’s 11” when Danny Ocean gets out of prison for the second time, and finds Tess sitting in the back of Rusty’s Ford Falcon. “Liar.” “Thief.”
For eroticism-not romance, I’d pick when William Hurt smashes the side lite and opens the front door to grab Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat.”
Another vote for Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn in Terminator.
That closeup of their intertwined fingers relaxing says it all.
Remains of the Day. Lots of scenes involving Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins, like when she is trying to wrestle the book off him and he won’t show her. She finds its a romance novel. Also, the devastating scene at the end of the movie where, having met up again ofr a day, he still doesn’t tell her that he loves her and then in the evening she leaves on the bus crying as the rain pours down. Sheesh, I’m getting misty just remembering that.
The three way scene in Wild Things.
Anne Heche and Joan Chen scene in Wild Side.
Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite movies and it has several romantic bits.
But I especially like
When Marianne thanks Col. Brandon for bringing her mother,
When Margret says “He’s kneeling down!”
When Brandon is reading poetry to the recovering Marianne
When Col. Brandon tell Elinor about a girl who was like Marianne and got a better aquaintence with the ways of the world and was ruined.
That’s just a great movie.
I also like the kiss in The Hudsucker Proxy between Norville and Amy when he asks her to kiss him for luck for his big presentation on the balcony.
King Kong (the original) when Kong is dying and he just looks at Fay Ray.
many many others.
Ok then, I guess men and women are not so different after all, since I love many of these scenes, and one of you nailed my very favorite (kevsnyde, you’re a man of excellent sensibility).
The problem with starting threads like these is that my Netflix list is already 210 movies long, and then you have to go describing things I haven’t seen but now must.
I think I can safely speak for Mr. S for at least one scene, because it was one we both recognized from our own experience and quote often:
from My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Ian (to Toula, paraphrased from memory): And hey, here’s some news about my life . . . it’s BORING. And then I met you, and you’re beautiful and fun and interesting . . .
This scene was ruined for me by the fact that throughout the movie, Ben was a personality-free dolt.
I want to second Remains of the Day.
Also the old couples in When Harry Met Sally. Harry and Sally themselves … well, not so much.
And I liked her a lot better than Mary Jane as played by Kristen Watsername.
God, that was beautiful. That movie had its ups and downs - I thought Andie McDowell was, well, awful - but that scene had me *sobbing * in the theater. I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by a scene in a film.
(Note: I’m a girl. I’m not voting, just agreeing.)
I was going to chime in with Lone Star also. But, not what mhendo mentioned.
I think the scene leading up to their actual love-making, and the sex-scene itself, after years of denial was one of the most romantic things I’ve ever seen.
Also, I’m a real sucker for some romantic comedies. I like in Love Actually after Colin Firth and the Portugese girl fish the papers out of the water, and their dis-connected conversations, “this is my favorite part of the day, taking you home.” “This is the worst part of my day, leaving you.”
I thought the message boards in that movie were hammy, though.
I usually like “falling in love” parts more than the pay-offs. I like when Tom and Meg are chatting in “you’ve got mail” more than their big kiss at the end.
Message boards? I don’t remember that.
Actual boards with messages on them.
A la that old Bob Dylan video.
