For the PlayStation2 Owners

Santa Claus is bringing me a PlayStation2 for Christmas; Mrs. Rastahomie showed me where he put one on layaway at Wal~… uh, a national discount retailer.

Looking at the box, I see that not all PS1 games will operate on the PS2. It also said that some DVD’s may not work.

Does anyone know which PS1 games won’t run on the PS2? I may have to seriously re-think my Christmas list if the Tomb Raider franchise won’t play on the PS2.

Oops, also forgot: know of any DVD’s that won’t run on the PS2?

Rasta…
Here are my words of wisdom.
Take all your PS1 games down to Funcoland and sell them back for credit on new games.
I know, all those old games are great, but so were the Atari 2600 games at one point.
The PS2 has some great games out there, but it also has many that fail to impress.
Here are some games that you can’t go wrong with:

SSX - no matter how you have felt about previous snowboarding games, this is one the greatest games ever made.

Smugglers Run - It’s got a great multiplayer mode with easy controls so that even new people can play. Smugglers Run 2 just came out, and I haven’t played it enough to know if it is as good as the first one.
We are playing Grand Theft Auto 3 right now. It is a little rough for some people. You run around and kill people, steal cop cars and generally act as criminal as possible. We love it. It is an awesome game that allows you to do an unbelievable amount of things.

Once you play any of these three games, you will find that you just don’t play the old PS1 games anymore.
One more piece of advice.

Many of the games look awesome, but lack in the game play department. I’ve been suckered into many purchases I’ve regreted with the PS2.

Rent, rent and rent before you buy.

For $5 you can know for sure.

Well, rasta, I’ve got a PS2 and I’ve noticed no problems at all playing my old games. And I’m not about to give them up. Why should I if I still enjoy them.

Anyway, there have been reports of problems. Some big and some small. For all info on backwards compatability:

As for the DVDs, I have seen a list around somewhere. But what problems you may have depend on the version of the DVD driver in your PS2. And the driver can be updated.

Updated? Dunno about that. Sony has a new ps2 (date code is R1) out with the dvd drivers already part of it. If you have an old ps2 it has to store them on the memory card instead.

Dunno about psx games, all the ones I have work fine & so do my psx2 games. Rasta, I really can’t say how your’s is going to be because you are going to get a new model & its probably going to have it’s own special quirks.

From the site:

Yes, updating can be done, but you need to buy the remote to do it. However, any current playstation probably has the newest driver anyway.
