I wear Birkenstock sandals, every day, wherever I go. Have done since moving to warmer climes a few years ago, and before that, whenever I ventured overseas to tropical countries.
I think my Birks are on their last legs though (no pun intended) and wanting some new recommendations.
With the caveats that I live in the tropics (so my feet sweat) and they can’t cost a gazillion dollars.
When I travel to a hot climate I wear my Keen sandals
I like the toe cover and they are very good for walking. My Wife and I walk a lot on vacation. The draw back is they can collect a lot of sand or pebbles because of the open sides.
When not in work or other formal gear my usual are bare feet at home whenever possible, leather deck shoes when going out and Crocs when I need shoes at home.
Deck shoes can get away with being smart-ish if going to dinner at say a pub, but are low, cool and don’t need socks.
Oh and steel cap boots when working in the shed on something heavy, or mowing the lawn.
I think Birkies are an excellent choice for all but situations where something semi formal (or more) is required.
I wear sandals with lug soles, kind of like these (mine are cuter, through ). I’ve walked all around a Disney park, the Vegas strip and hiked around Lake Tahoe in them. They’re not the prettiest but they are freaking comfortable.
I’ve also got several pairs of Jambus. They can be really expensive but all mine were on sale at different times on Amazon. Super comfortable and dressy enough that I can wear them to work with skirts.
My Keen sandals are the most comfortable straight of the box walking shoes I have ever bought; picking up sand and pebbles is a thing.
I also wear Teva Hurricane sandals. They take a little breaking in but do form to your feet pretty quickly. I wear them anywhere, including day hikes on the rockiest parts of the Appalachian Trail.
If Chacos came in half sizes I would try them but I wear 9 ½.
Central Arizona. “If it doesn’t try to bite you, sting you or stick you, it’s not native to Arizona.” Fully closed shoes or boots anytime I’m outside. Getting a scorpion sting to the insole isn’t the worse thing in the world, but it’s not a whole bunch of fun either.
I got some Columbia Sportswear sandal like these a few years ago on sale for $15.00 and loved them, so that’s all I wear in the summer, but our daughter got some Keens and swears by them. For whatever that’s worth.
