Vanilla, if you’re arguing that there are other things grosser than abortions in the world, I totally agree. However, the grossness factor of it pales into insignificance when you consider that you are killing another human being by having an abortion. The most bloodless, humane abortion is still denying one of God’s children the experience of mortality.
I realize this is a sensitive subject for you. I don’t condemn you for having one, but I do condemn the act itself. Thank goodness you can get forgiveness for it.
Then who DOES it belong to, if not the woman carrying it?
Until it develops a consciousness of its own, how can it be said to possess anything at all? Some folks say “An abortion stops a beating heart.” Well, the heart is not the seat of consciousness, the brain is. According to the site http://www.visibleembryo.com/ (which was recommended by http://www.britannica.com), brain waves are not detectable until Stage 19, at around 47 to 48 days after ovulation (which is one day before fertilization).
Does it have a soul then? Or did it receive one at conception? (Is it conscious at the moment the brain becomes active, or does consciousness develop much later?)
Isn’t it fun when people use 2500 year old poetry as the basis for their morality?
Hm. In this case, if you’re using the fact that God knew us before he even formed us in the womb as proof of the evil of abortions, then either:
Contraceptives and masturbation are attempts to thwart the will of God.
or
God plans ahead of time for contraceptives, and abortions, and the miscarriages he causes when plotting out the course of each person’s life on this planet.
When I made my previous post, I thought, “Watch: Somone’s going to quote Jeremiah.”
Being an atheist, it doesn’t settle the question for me at all. It just raises more, most of which have nothing to do with abortion. So I won’t go into them here.
I think the punishment for those who want abortions to be illegal should be, uh, that they stand outside a planned parenthood office in the freezing cold… or maybe be forced to adopt all the unwanted kids… starting right now, with the ones in foster homes, whether they be of a different race, color, be handicapped, or already be like 8 years old and not so “cute.”
but usually once you hit submit, it gets through…
If you aren’t certain, instead of hitting submit again, I would suggest opening that thread in a new window to see if your reply is there.
I deleted black455’s six or so multiposts, in case you wonder what Kyber is talking about. Trust the php! It takes about fifteen minutes to clean up a nest of multiposts, which can really add up if a lot of people do it.
This implies that God knew whoever this refers to before conception. It says “before I formed you in the womb,” not “*when * I formed you in the womb.” So this really has nothing to do with abortion. And since I am an atheist, this argument carries no weight.
Of course, if you don’t want abortion to be illegal, you just think it’s wrong, then there is no argument.
jab1, you beat me to it.
The fetus does indeed belong to the woman; unless she is carrying it as a surrogate.
It is hers, she is the mother!
And good point ruadh(sic?).
WHy is it okay if the mother is raped? Its not the fetus’ fault that its mother was raped; why not give it a chance on life?
I wish no one ever Needed an abortion. Its ridiculous to get more than one, I learned my lesson once.
DOn’t say you might not do the same if you were a single pregnant female (or are you saying you are too moral to do that? I trust you know you aren’t.)
According to my beliefs, it belongs to the pre-existent spirit child of God who is waiting for it.
These are questions to which I don’t have concrete answers.

Should we then force rape victims to raise the children of their rapists? How cruel is that? But even in cases of rape or incest, abortion is not always right, it’s true. Here are some guidelines I believe in:
Vanilla, I’m not implying that I’m morally superior to you. You know I’m not. But as for abortions, the way I was raised, it would be unthinkable for me to have one (assuming I was a woman) except maybe for the reasons I gave above. Maybe not even then. This isn’t because I’m better than you; it’s because of my upbringing and what I was taught as a young 'un. And it’s also because of what I, an independent thinking individual, personally believe is right and wrong.
And to those who don’t believe as you do? They should be subjected to laws based upon your religion?
The rest of your post often mentiones “me,” “I,” and other words denoting your personal opinions on the matter, presumably mostly from your religious beliefs.
So, if someone is not making you get an abortion, what’s the problem here?
TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Six months, 23 hours, 40 minutes and 28 seconds.
7359 cigarettes not smoked, saving $919.93.
Extra time with Drain Bead: 3 weeks, 4 days, 13 hours, 15 minutes.
Should I be denied the right to vote for laws that agree with my religious beliefs? Hey, if others don’t believe as I do, let them vote their own beliefs. I’m not stopping them, but I am asserting the right to my own opinions and right to vote as well.
Yeah, you’re right, no one should care about any issue unless they’re directly involved with it. Let apathy rule!
The only penalties a woman would receive from having an abortion would be ; infections from dirty instruments used in the abortions, death -from improper abortion techniques, and the inability to seek profesional help after the abortion.
The only persons affected by this would be the poor.
To each his own. If you do not believe in it then please dont do it, but dont try and pass your morality on anyone else.
