Ford From Hell

Here is a little hint.
When you see the new mechanic give him the history of the problem.
Such things as It only does it 1st thing in the morning.
or after I drive it for 2 hours.
things like it sometimes does it in traffic are important.
It does it only when it is raining would ring a bell
It gives him a place to start from.
he doesn’t have a lot of timecause any mechanic who is worth his salt is busy and they like it that way so be breif.GOOD LUCK

What about the guys who do “Car Talk” on public radio? Don’t they have a shop in the Cambridge/Boston area? They seem pretty good at diagnosing problems over the airways. I vote for the starter and/or the started solenoid, myself.

I would be inclined to say the alternator has one bad diode out of three, or the voltage regulator is shot. This is based on the fact that the battery is new and held the charge for a week when the car was not run.

Voltage output to the battery should be 14 to 16 volts with the car battery charging and a volt meter across the terminals.

I’ve got my car back already, and I’ll be firing it up tomorrow night so I can have dinner at a friend’s house. If it breaks down again, I’ll let you know what my * new [/]mechanic says about the problem

Zor heres the answer:

FORD is an acronym. Found On Road Dead

Here’s another acronym that is astoundingly appropriate:

Fix Or Repair Daily!

But where were the Spiders?

A few years back, I was introduced to a man in a tavern. He said he was unemployed. I asked him what he did when he had a job. “I’m a self-employed mechanic,” he said. I asked him how he could be unemployed if he was self-employed. He replied, “I can’t fix nothing!”

I heard an old story, might have been an urban legend, about a car battery that always drained at home, but would never do the same thing at the dealers. It turned out that the house was on a very steep hill, and whenever he parked in his driveway it was enough of an angle to trip the mercury switch in his hood light to come on thinking that the hood was open.
