Forgot To Send In My Rebate

OK this is my mini rant…Errr

I got DSL from AT&T with a $79.00 router, free just fill in the rebate and mail it off, you get the $79.00 (less shipping)

So I got the DSL, set it up. Well the bill came I paid it, filled out the rebate info and then just didn’t send it in. Today I was like, what’s this stamped envelope sitting on my desk. It’s the rebate form. Errrr. Supposed to be sent in within 60 days, it’s over 90s days now.

I hate rebates…

Yeah it’s my own fault, I can’t believe how careless I was.

Anyone else got failed rebate stories to share. Make me feel less stupid :smack:

I’m so bad at rebates that I completely ignore them when comparing prices.

I just found my name on the Missing Money Web site that states sponsor. At least in Ohio, they require businesses to report unclaimed funds every year.

Anyway, the $19.95 owed to me was from Best Buy. I can’t think of any other reason they would owe me money other than from a rebate I failed to send in or something. The address they had was my pre-2005 address but I’m not sure of the details.

I wonder if in a few years your name will pop up for AT&T owing you $79. I think states are cracking down on rebate laws, because they can be pretty rough on the consumer sometimes.

I hate rebates only because they take their damn sweet time processing them.

You’re exactly the sort of person these companies count on when they offer rebates. There are actuarial types whose job it is to work out what percentage of people are likely to return completed rebate forms, and to set the rebate amount accordingly. If every single person claimed the rebate correctly, companies would probably stop offering rebates.

Exactly.
Some people don’t care about the money, others forget (like you did) and others screw it up and forget to send the original paperwork, etc.

It wouldn’t hurt to send in the envelope, even though the date has expired. I have heard that some companies, for fear of lawsuits, honor the rebates even if they have officially expired.

This is a very sensible thing to do, IMHO.

I got my AT&T DSL rebate without any problem. However, I was also supposed to get $125 for switching my internet access from cable to DSL, but when I checked on the status of that I was told it was denied. The operator couldn’t tell me why, but said she would reinstate it. Come to think of it, it’s about time for me to call and ask why I haven’t heard from them in 21 days, as promised.

And it’s not a localized thing either. When I worked at a computer store, many customers would loudly disregard the rebate and announce that fact to whoever was standing nearby.

Seems to make them feel good about themselves

Agreed. I hate the concept. Give me your best price.

Fortunately rebates and cashback offers really haven’t caught on here- most people’s reasoning is (rightly, IMHO) “If they can mail me a cheque for $20 in three month’s time, why can’t they just knock $20 off the sale price now and save everyone a lot of dicking about?”

Naw, they still earn interest on your money for 6 - 12 weeks.

I have a $75 rebate sitting here I’m supposed to be sending to the Electric Company - a bonus since my new AC is energy star.

It’s been sitting here nearly 1 year, BUT it has no expiration date mentioned. Maybe once I get the nerve to fill it in and step outside to the mailbox I’ll get my money… Just seems too difficult a task at the moment.

OK. Fuckit. I’m doing it now…
