- I need to know the correct use of the old circle male/female symbols - which goes with which sex (or at least one, anyway) and the orientation of the cross and arrow (I thinks the cross points straight up, and the arrow at 5:00 o’clock, but I first gained conciousness in the mid 70’s so I don’t directly remember myself). - MC
I believe they are the roman symbols for Mars (male) and Venus (female).
At least thets what is used to represent said planets in most encyclopedias…
Oh, the arrow one is the male (duh, just look at that manly, erect angle!)
The one with the cross is female (I like to think of it as the crosshairs of a target).
I think the arrow is male and the cross is female. The arrow is at 2 o’clock and the cross is at 6 o’clock.
The cross (female/venus) goes straight down, not up. The arrow (male/mars) points to 1:30.
If men had wings,
and bore black feathers,
few of them would be clever enough to be crows.
- Rev. Henry Ward Beecher
The boy symbol is styled after the shield and spear of Ares, and the girl symbol is styled after the mirror of Aphrodite. So, men are violent and defensive, and women are vain.
As you might have guessed, I don’t particularly like the symbols. The circle and triangle I prefer.
I particulary enjoyed some symbols seen on the bathroom doors of a Budapest pizza place:
screw & nut
(male & female)
It did take me a second to decide which bathroom to go into.
