I have been shopping for a new car, and checked my credit report today. One of the dealers I talked to shows up on my report as “Health and medical” in the type of business, but it shows what is clearly the name of a car dealer. I did talk to this dealer about financing options, so it does not surprise me that they show up on my report. But why does it show up as medical? Could this be an issue for me at some point?
Why not dispute it anyway?
I would dispute it. Don’t allow wrong data to get repeated.
I would WAG that perhaps a family member of the car dealership owner, such as a spouse, has access to the credit reports through some health care work and was able to add the car dealership under their access.
I think you should report it if anything so they might have to correct it.
Also if the above is true, it may indicate some underhandedness which may influence your decision to buy from them.
I used to be in the credit granting/review industry.
Rather than malfeasance, it’s far more likely the car dealership is coded in somebody’s database as industry type ID 1234 when it should have been 1235 and somebody somewhere at a credit bureau fat-fingered that data item when the dealership’s account was first set up.
And yes, it’s worth disputing if for no other reason than doing your civic duty to help everybody who’s touched by that dealership to have cleaner data.
