Ooh, and go to the Atomic Cafe on North Limestone. Wonderful Carribbean food and the best patio bar in town. Definitely order the sweet potato chips. The big basket. Definitely.
The Bangkok House on the corner of Rose and Euclid is really good, too. I regret not making it down that way on our last trip home. If you go, you’ll be right across the street from UK’s campus, so you might as well wander around. Campus isn’t terribly exciting, but it is pretty.
Ellen Cherry, I had no idea the Parkette might be closed. What am I going to do for the occasional Kentucky Po’ Boy fix from now on? Depressing, I tell ya.
I totally forgot to mention the Atomic Cafe. Thanks for triggering some truly great memories of law school happy hours, CrazyCatLady. The sweet potato chips are excellent, but I think their coconut shrimp is divine.
Frankd6-
Yes it used to be in Frankfort, but about 7 years ago they moved into Lxington and opened a retial shop there… there’s still lots of plants for sale and a lot of antiques and primitive stuff, but it’s got a totally different feel from the old place…
I totally forgot the Headley-Whitney Museum! It’s right on the road to Midway. There’s also Weisenberger Mill out that way. A water-driven mill that produces the best stone-ground grits and cornmeal if you like that sort of thing.
The Parkette is currently closed but I believe there’s a group trying to get it open again. It may well be open by July.
OK, Dopers. I have a couple of specific questions for you. I can print some coupons from a website, and would like to know your opinion on the following restaurants (i.e. whether or not I should bother clipping them):
India Palace 3
Kashmir Indian Restaurant (yes I do like Indian food)
Pop & Docks Deli Cafe
Two Keys Tavern
A-1-A Sandbar & Grille
The Garden Cafe
Gattitown
Griffin Gate Garden Restaurant
JW’s Steakhouse
Cafe at the Four Points Sheraton
Chukker’s
Polo’s Restaurant
Sigee’s
The Post Restaurant
Tippedore’s
Kentucky Bread Bakery & Cafe
Spud’s Grill and Tavern
Kessler’s BBQ Station
Great American Restaurant
The Boathouse Grill & Bar
Bananas on the River
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
I’ve never been to most of the places on that list (or even heard of some of them), but as I recall Kashmir was quite tasty. If it’s the little hole in the wall place on North Limestone, then yes, it’s good.
The World Famous Two Keys was mediocre and loud.
I’ve never been, but I’ve always heard that Bananas is really, really good.
You might also check out Pazzo’s, on the corner of N. Limestone and Euclid. (It’s a block or so away from Kashmir.) Really great pizza, calzones, and salads, and 22 beers on tap. They’re pretty cheap, so you don’t really need coupons.
Oh, and Ed and Fred’s Desert Moon is really yummy, too. It’s a bit pricier than most of the places I’ve suggested, but it’s well worth it.
Oh, and Gattitown is pretty fun too. It’s like a grownups Chuck E. Cheese. You pay like $6 or so to get in and have all the pizza, pasta, salad, desserts and fountain drinks you can pack away. The dining rooms all have televisions showing programming that matches the room’s theme (cartoons, classic movies, etc.)
Then, there’s the arcade. Oh, the arcade. Like I said, it’s the Chuck E. Cheese for adults.
I know this is old, but I just wanted to ask one last question.
From Indianapolis, IN, what’s my best route? Should I take 74 southeast to Cincinnati, then south on 75? Or should I take 65 south to Louisville and then go east on whatever highway that is?
Also, if you have any last-minute suggestions on what to do / see / eat, I would really appreciate it.
India Palace 3 - not too bad
Kashmir Indian Restaurant (yes I do like Indian food) - I didn’t really like this one
The rest I’ve never heard of. If you like Chinese food, they have a place there called Panda Garden that makes authentic Chinese food, although you have to ask for the special menu or something. If you like Thai food, they have a good restaurant called Bangkok House. (It might be kind of hard to find; it’s almost underground.) If you like Mexican food, I recommend Jalapeno’s (is that a chain?). Their chicken fajita is yummy!
Cool hangouts? You’re not the laser tag type, are you Sorry, I don’t know of any “cool hangouts” in Lexington, KY…
Well, see, I’ve never been to Indianapolis, so I can’t really say. However, I prefer to avoid the Cinncinnati area myself as I’ve gotten lost there a couple of times. Of course, I don’t go there as often as I’m in Louisville so I don’t know if this helps any.
Just take I-65 south to Louisville, then get on I-64 eastbound. There’s a some construction on I-65, but hopefully they’ll have things squared away for the 4th of July weekend.
Hey – at Shakertown, be sure to order the lemon pie. Adkins or not, it’s outstanding. It’s a fruit pie (crust on top, crust on bottom, slices of lemon in-between) from the 1850s recipe.
Is the Keeneland race course open? They may have tours if not racing.
Don’t know that you’d care to go out of your way for it, but some miles outside of Lexington is the town of Paris, in which is the burial place of Secretariat at Claiborne Farms.
If I ever made it into the area, I’d sure as heck try to visit it. In the world of horse racing, that’s about as hallowed as ground can be.
What - No one’s suggested Joe Bologna’s? Always been one of the best pizza places in Lexington. (Of course, if you’re on Atkin’s, I can see why you’d want to skip a place like this, but you DID say you were willing to splurge)
If you like Indian food, there’s a new restaurant off of Man O’War near Richmond Road called Tandoor (it’s actually on Mapleleaf Dr.) It’s delicious, and they have a lunch buffet. India Palace 3 is also very good, and they have a dinner buffet on weekends. I’ve not been all that impressed by Kashmir, myself.
Going over your list of restaurants, I have a note to add: Kentucky Bread Bakery and Cafe has been closed for a few years now. There have been two other businesses in its place since then. I miss it, though.
As a Univ. of KY Alum, I’d recommend a walk through campus, just because. It’s a nice campus, and this time of year there tends to be some nice landscaping and flowers.
If you’re a bibliophile, you must go to Joseph-Beth Booksellers. It’s in Lexington Green off of Nicholasville Road. You can wander in there for hours. There’s a cafe in there, too, that serves a decent cup of cappucino.
I could probably go on and on. If you need more suggestions, let me know.
