Four reasons why Obama should lose but Four other reasons why he will win.

The following article was taken from a local newspaper yesterday. I just love the way the author describes Romney and Ryan in Point number 2 under “why OBama will win”. He calls them a “loser” and “liar” respectively. That is just freaking excellent! - could be the very best article on Obama I have yet seen. I loved it!

Here are four reasons why Barack Obama should lose the Nov. 6 election, and four reasons why he won’t. Why Obama and the Democrats should lose:

  1. He lost sight of why he was elected.

  2. He squandered his first two years.

  3. The American economy is in the tank.

  4. The American people still want change.
    Why he will win:

  5. He is still very well-liked and trusted.

  6. His political opposition is hopeless.

  7. American conservatives always over-reach.

  8. The American people are not dumb.

The Republican primaries came up with the best possible candidate running this election, you can’t blame the process for not miraculously coming up with a non existent good candidate.

Jesus. When you write this type of article, your supporting arguments should support your arguments.

  1. Either Obama’s economic and foreign policies are the same as Bush’s, or this is false. Pretty sure it’s false.

  2. Saying that healthcare was the only major accomplishment of the first 2 years is bullshit, but the fact that Republicans weren’t willing to cooperate should be a reason not to elect them, if anything.

  3. a) The national debt is not a measure of the health of the economy, and b) ‘unemployment still over 8%’ is an arbitrary metric that implies that the unemployment rate has not changed.

  1. Congress’ approval rating is not a reason to vote for or against Obama.

Try again.

I guess it depends on what it means by "should lose’. DO they mean should lose as in deserves to lose or “should lose” as in historically this is the kind of things that would lead to losing. The former definition makes the four points sound dumb, but the latter definition I think is kind of on-the-mark, especially #3, If the last four things were not in effect then the optics of the economy would likely make a re-election difficult. I am not saying the economy criticism is fair, all sorts of caveats should go along with it. But the recovery as been rather sluggish, although steady, and that normally would be very damaging to an incumbent.

The American People are the dumbest fucking people I know. If they had even marginal intelligence, Obama would be the Republican and someone like Kucinich would represent the Democrats, with a Libertarian/Tea Party/ Crazy Right party and a Socialist/Communist/ Crazy Left party fighting for the extra 5% of the vote.

Lazlo Hapsburg, please don’t quote large swaths of copyrighted material. I have removed the excess.

twickster, for the SDMB

It’s simpler than that. The electorate thinks Obama has done an okay job and has no idea what sort of job Romney will do.

And to that end, the Romney campaign seems to have no idea what they would do.

Here’s a summary from Rachel Maddow on how much the Romney campaign is foundering in search of a coherent message: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/the-rachel-maddow-show/48980057#48980057

The basics - for a brief time, the Romney campaign appeared to be endorsing a state’s right to choose whether pot should be legal, and then reversed course. Romney described the sequester/fiscal cliff bill that Ryan voted for as a “big mistake” forcing Ryan to outright lie to Norah O’Donnell in order to try to wriggle out of it. Romney said he would keep some of the healthcare reform act and then they said they wouldn’t. Finally, they’ve introduced some clear culture war elements with the bit about taking God off the currency and high profile connections with Steve King and Pat Robertson.

As subtext, it’s worth noting that Romney’s unfavorable ratings continue to be higher than his favorables. People have never really been behind his candidacy, and he IMHO will make it difficult for people to support him when he cannot give a coherent message.

And you have Romney blasting Obama for defense cuts that Paul Ryan voted for.

Oops.

You write for the Mirror?

Meh, this is pretty much a recap of what folks on both sides are arguing that they’re disappointed about their own candidate.

Supposedly by focusing only on ACA and not going for big liberal trasformations? The Right Wing got a huge victory in 2010 by arguing Obama had overreached to the left on everything - even with that emasculated Health Care Reform!

While I can’t know this for sure, it seems that if you consider the approval rating of Congress has been at or below 20% for over a year, and Obama’s has been hovering around 50% for the same time, it seems very likely that the American electorate doesn’t hold Obama responsible for the economy and recognizes there isn’t much he can do with out cooperation from other elected officials. I hear the question asked all the time, “with the economy in such a state, how come Romney isn’t beating the tar out of Obama?” There’s your answer.

ETA: ratings taken from realclearpolitics.com

  1. He lost sight of why he was elected.

No, he campaigned on being post-partisan. And he stuck to it, despite the Republicans’ refusal to go along.

  1. He squandered his first two years.

True, because of 1. He wasted a lot of time & effort trying to get along with Republicans, despite their obvious refusal to play along. I tend to fault him for this, but I sure wouldn’t vote for a Republican because of it.

  1. The American economy is in the tank.

Because the Republicans put it there, and they’ve tried their damnedest to obstruct any efforts to fix it, and to pretend it’s Obama’s fault. Again, no way would this make me vote for a Republican.

  1. The American people still want change.

Yes. And so we’d vote back in the fuckers who screwed it all up??!?!?

Even worse; they said he overreached when he proposed the Republican healthcare plan!
