I’d been growing bored with John Doe… until that season finale. DAMN, that was a great plot twist. Maddening, but a damn good twist.

And now I’ll never find out more.

Color me not surprised.

The show had promise, but it was based on sort of a fatal premise, that he could never figure out where he came from. The same problem that Gilligan’s Island, the Fugitive, and Lost in Space had – every plot and scheme is futile, because if you solve the essential problem, the show is over. Now some shows (e.g. the X-Files) can overcome the built in futility of their character’s quests because the shows are well-written or have engaging characters. John Doe wasn’t original enough for that – you had the quirky assistant, the suspicious but friendly cop, and the Mysterious Cabal who managed to bury every clue at the end of the episode. Meh.

(I stopped watching fairly early on after the writer’s proved that they couldn’t do convincing crime detection, so maybe it changed later on.)

Digger (the bartender) appears to be a part of the Phoenix organization who’s been after Doe.

I quit watching after a) Firefly got cancelled as the lead-in and b) they iced Grace Zabriskie. Not that upset, really.

Yeesh, while the source is less than authoritative, this seems like the sort of dipshit move Fox is famous for. And keeping “Fastlane” instead.
