Yes, exactly. The other three issues over Fox’s poor broadcast quality stated in the OP were a diversion to throw off people not as smart as you
Maybe you can pull your head out, realize that the pitting was about the job Fox was doing presenting the Superbowl and less about the fact that the game was interesting to people who actually thought that the Eagles had a chance.
Frankly, that’s the kind of thing people who don’t shit about football say. Looked to me that they both had effective blitzes working and were still pretty discliplined in their gaps. It was a better played quarter of football than the 4th.
What is the matter with the lot of you that you can pit Fox without pitting Joe Buck, Cris Collinsworth or Troy Aikman, as talentless a bunch of hacks as ever there have been?
It’s so rare that I hear TV announcers actually add value to the sportscast that it seems kinda redundant to pit these turkeys in particular. Even if one of them did call Brian Westbrook “Michael.”
Now that we’re in the era of down-and-distance, line-of-scrimmage, and first-down-line graphics, I’m all set to do without announcers altogether. Or give me a feed of each team’s hometown radio announcers, who can generally be counted on to know more detail about their team than the network boobs know about both teams put together.
And to Rilch and BubbaDog, that’s three of us. “Giddy-up Giddy-up Giddy-up let’s go” indeed.
You’re right ShibbOleth. We deserve your criticism. More than we deserve Trunks attempted hijack to turn this into an Eagles/Pats discussion.
[Bolding mine]
I think you’ve answered your own question. Most of the people watching the Superbowl tune in for the “event” more than the game. And FOX completely fucked up presenting the event.
I’m not a huge sports fan by any means, but I do follow the NFL pretty closely, and these guys are my favorite announcing team by far. I’m not saying they’re just that excellent, but they’re light years better then the ESPN or CBS guys IMO.
Those of you who can’t stand Buck and friends - who do you like calling your games?
I think you guys are off-base about Buck, Collinsworth and Aikman.
Joe Buck, whether we’re talking football or baseball, is one of the best out there. He’s humorous and off-beat when it suits the broadcast but always right on top of the action.
Collinsworth and Aikman are both knowledgeable about the game. They were on top of the reviews yesterday. THey identified Brady’s look-offs and McNabb’s “stare-downs”.
They highlighted what the loss of Eugene Wilson meant to the Pats. They were critical of the Eagle’s time management at the end.
I liked what Aikman had to say about that insane Branch catch in the second half.
The broke-down the Pats use of the screen pass to offset the Eagles over-aggressiveness.
Beyond that, I’ve just never in my life heard ANYONE happy with any commentators. Everyone of them is an idiot to some of you. It’s as if there’s some mythical standard of greatness for announcers out there, usually someone from the past who was equally villified in his time.
FOX does NOT have a better team than these guys, neither does CBS (what? Gumbel and Simms. . . no!). There’s only one Al Michaels and he doesn’t work for FOX. Madden? Maybe we could check the tape where he recommended that Brady and the Pats run the clock out in the Superbowl against the Rams. That’s some insight.
Local radio guys? It is to laugh. Color-guys with the understanding of high-school assistants. Play-by-play buys with more home-team bias than the player’s moms.
“…oh, and incidentally, there was also a 15-yard ‘roughing the passer’ penalty…but, even though we have enough time to show you a replay of it, we don’t feel like doing so”.
Some of the local radio guys are actually quite decent (Mark Vandemeer (sp?), voice of the Texans, is pretty good), and it’s not necessarily such a bad thing for the radio guys to have a home team slant. 80%+ of the people listening are probably pulling for the “good guys”, and might not mind an announcer with a similar bias.
Yeah, it was 720p on Comcast Cable as well. All season Fox promos have been touting “broadcast in 720p High Definition. The finest High Definition standard in the world” or some such. I think they gave up the 480p, which they called Extended Widescreen not High Def, last year.
BubbaDog, from your complaints about signal strength, I assume you were watching an over-the-air ATSC broadcast. Your local Fox affiliate may be converting from the raw Fox 720p feed to 480p for some unfathomable reason.
Well, I kind of get some of this ire, but most of it is stuff I don’t really even notice. I’m only 32, so most of my football watching life (rabid Denver fan for 20 years this season. Yes. I know. Some of you hate Denver. Don’t care. )has been filled with all this glittery new shiny stuff like lines and bars and extras. I can see how distracting it must be to people who watched football before all that stuff was in the way, but I’m lucky that I’m just used to it. It’s like looking out a dirty window to me.
I agree on some of the announcers…Don’t like Chris Collinsworth much. I think he’s an arrogant prick hack, but the granddaddy of all drooling idiot annoying shit for brains commentators award HAS to go to John Madden. I understand he KNOWS his football, but damn if he doesn’t sound like a raving half-wit all hopped up on caffeine and schnapps. Mostly, commentators to me are just background noise. Occasionally helpful, but mostly vapid pits of self importance.
That being said, it was a better game than most, and I’m still happy to watch.
I wonder if John Madden gets pissed that they don’t let him bellow, er, um, announce the Super Bowl?
I got that off an old thread on AVSforum.com. I just checked later posts and found that its 720p.
So it must be 720p for just about two fucking blocks in KC because the dickheaded losers that run the local station have it operating at a broadcasting strength 1/100 that of the rest of the local channels.
I can get every digital channel over the air except FOX. Even the local evangalist channel puts out a stronger signal than those rat bastards at FOX.
Yeah, I remember that one. Even if Brady hadn’t been able to move the Pats down the field for that winning FG, trying to score, then and there, was the right call.
Maybe I’m lucky, being in the DC market. But the fact that Sonny and Sam are rooting for the 'Skins has never stopped them from telling it like it is when the Redskins screw up; they know what good play looks like, and get upset when the Redskins don’t live up to that standard. And like I said, they know one team - the Redskins - inside and out. Which means they can learn a great deal about the other team each week, since they only have to master one new team each week, rather than two.
Maybe it’s different in other markets; maybe the local announcers aren’t as perceptive, or let being a ‘homer’ get between them and honest commentary. But I’d be willing to chance it.
When I was in college without a TV (the last three years), I listened to radio broadcasts of Ravens game over the Internet. It was always the opposing team’s feed, even when the Ravens were at home, so I got to hear a wide variety of announcers. Most were mediocre, some were bad, Pittsburgh’s were particularly awful. On the other hand, I really appreciated the guys who did commentary for the Browns–they always seemed insightful and were quite fair in their comments, even while it was clear who they wanted to win.
So it seems it varies a lot from market to market.
