I kinda feel like Egyptian archaeology is now in the same category as UFO’s and high-speed car chases. And what of Dr. Zahi Hawass? Credible scientist or clown?

Disclaimer: I didn’t watch the whole thing. That said:
I tuned in because I thought hey, Hugh Downs is a reputable journalist, maybe this’ll be cool. Yikes… I ended up wondering how the real archeologists involved felt about having actors poke around in the tombs. Normally I’m really into Egyptology but I couldn’t watch this thing.
The thing that really turned me off was that pseudo-interview Hugh was doing with the guy from The Mummy. Am I wrong, or was that totally fake?
I saw most of it. It was very odd.
I have seen Dr. Hawass on several other “legitimate” documentaries about Egyptian archaeological digs. I think he’s the Head Archaeologist for Egyptian Antiquities or something like that. I’m sure his REAL title is more complicated. 
Typical of Fox programming, it was overhyped and failed to live up to it. Ho hum. Give me Discovery or TLC anyday.
Dr. Hawass has a website here. His credentials are impressive, but he comes off looking very foolish in the “shows” I’ve seen. Admittedly, I’ve not seen any of his “legitimate” documentaries.
Rosebud, I agree with your thoughts regarding Hugh Downs. Seeing him in the previews raised my expectations. If I see Jonathan Frakes, I know what to expect.
Rosebud, I totally agree. Like everyone else I fell for the Hugh Downs/real journalism ploy. What was the Samuel L. Jackson thing about? And yes, the egyptologist was insane. The whole thing was surreal and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who noticed. Poor Hugh Downs, Barbara Walters has sucked out his journalistic integrity…
No program that includes a disinterment can be all bad. And I like the crazy archeologist (redundant). Surrealism and grave robbing are a natural combination.

OK…It wasn’t all bad. The clip showing an actual mummification was interesting and gross (when they were digging out the cadaver’s brains through his nose), but that lasted only 45 seconds.

Didn’t watch it. I used to be seriously into Egyptology, but the over-hyping just leads to more tourists, which destroys the unbalenced PH within the tombs. I know the government of Egypt relys on tourism dollars, but it’s ruining the artifacts. Feh.
The hell with robbing old Egyptian graves—I say let’s bring this up to date!
There are a whole buncha graves right here in the good old USA that have hardly been opened at all! Let’s get a Fox camera crew down to Green-Wood in Brooklyn and crank open a few vaults. Cool old clothes, jewelry, decaying corpses—maybe even a surprise or two! We could have cadaverous Mayor Giuliani as the host. Or Regis! We’ll call it “Who Wants to Disinter a Millionaire?”
