I just moved into my new apartment, & 3 of my framed posters seem kind of…well, wrinkily.
Inside the frames & behind the glass/plastic.
My framed art prints aren’t (thank OG), but 4 framed posters, all from different sources & made from different materials, & framed differently, are. A 4th is fine.
They sat on the floor for a month, or two, until I got around to hanging them.
My apartment is a little humid, but most days I leave the air conditioner on all day (the nights have been too cool for that).
Almost all apartment complexes clean carpets between tenants. While carpet cleansers are mostly water, they do have some chemicals mixed in. Given that your posters were on the floor, they may have picked up some of the evaporation that made them wrinkle more than you’d expect from normal humidity in the air. Even if the carpets feel dry to the touch, it can take some time to dry completely. And, as a former apartment manager, I can attest that we often had the carpet cleaner moving his equipment out even as we were signing the paperwork with new tenants.
I’m afraid I misread the title as “Famed Posters Getting Wrinkly”, and I must say I thought it was rather unfair to those of us who still have “Charter member” under our names.
Presumably the reason the “art” posters didn’t wrinkle is because they were dry mounted to a thick mat board. The reason the other posters did wrinkle is because of higher humidity.
I’d try keeping the air conditioner on constantly for a few weeks (set it on the hottest setting at night) and maybe avoid activities that add moisture to the air: take cooler showers and keep the bathroom door closed, etc.
Taking the pictures out of their frames might speed their change in moisture content.
If you can get the prints to flatten out, then have them dry mounted. A framing shop can do it, but might charge considerable money. I’m not sure what the alternatives are, but look around for other options. Maybe craft shops, or places that cater to architects and graphic designers.
Even if you can’t get the prints completely flat dry mounting will sometimes flatten them. Ask the counter help.
Using spray mount adhesive is another option, but messy, often less durable, and it’s hard to not get wrinkles in the posters.
Yeah the mounted bit was the part i was trying to get to. I have a poster that originally came with Devo’s New Traditionalists album that I finally framed after nearly 20 years of hanging on my wall(s) with thumbtacks, but I had it dry mounted to prevent sagging and wrinkles, and got a nifty matte and frame for it as well. It looks great, and I don’t have to worry too much about it anymore.
Ha, you mentioned graphic designer, which means I’m entitled to comment!
OP, moisture has certainly got to your prints. The art printes will either be dry mounted, linen backed or printed on stiff card, which is why the haven’t buckled.
Buckling and stretching of paper can happen in even the mildest instances of moisture in the air - even putting paper through a printer stretches it, often making it difficult to mount flat with the aid of standard adhesives (such as spraymount).
Even when (if) your prints dry out, they are highly unlikely to dry flat. The safest bet is to take them to a picture framing shop and ask them to mount them for you - if you try it yourself, you’re likely to end up with creases (as the dampness will have stretched the paper in uneven ways).
