Huh. I’m a bit surprised that France didn’t have that already.
Here in Austria it’s been an opt-out system since the early 1980s. To opt out, you’d have your name entered into the “Organ Donation Opting-Out Register”, which basically just requires filling out a form. As far as I know, there really aren’t that many people opting out though - which means the consent rate for organ donations around here is at over 99,5%.
The authorities refuse to allow people to pay for organs, so there aren’t enough willing donors.
To not-echo DrDeth, I have yet to see anyone make a rational argument against it. Then, of course, they are surprised that people don’t want to donate.
As far as rational reason go, however, the simple fact that the organs don’t belong to the medical system, nor anyone else’s convenience, ough to be enough. Doesn’t really matter why you want them.
I’m not paranoid, but if I were, I might worry that they’d let me die when they could have revived me, just so they could use my organs. Not sure if that counts as “rational” or not.
A thousand people per year is more likely, yes. Maybe even more if you’re ambitious, but you’d need the medical infrastructure and so on for that too, it’s not done just by simply raising the number of potential organ donors.
Spain is and has been the world leader in organ donations for many years, and it’s just been published that for 2016 they did a total of 4,818 organ transplants, which is a new record even for them.
So they’re using the same technique spam emailers use to get your email address.
I usually check the donor box when renewing my license, but if I were in France I think I’d opt out. It seems like a kind of sleazy way of tricking people into it. I also think the medical industry rapes people financially as it is, and now they can make even more off your body without your explicit permission.
How about $100k to the heirs for each body they exploit.
