And if you watch the simulations in the movie Wargames closely, you’ll see that many of the scenarios are things like India and Pakistan getting into a nuclear exchange that then pulls everyone else in. That is, it wasn’t all US vs USSR as the instigation.
I always thought that was a nice touch.
Which, by the way, was before Pakistan got nuclear capabilty.
I made a topic a few years ago about “Bad Nuclear War Scenarios in Fiction” that among other things had a nuclear WW3 start after Paris gets nuked by Eastern European terrorists, France responds back by nuking the fuck out of Belarus who had been harboring the terrorists. Russia sensing an opportunity moves it’s military into Belarus and claims the country is now Russian territory again. Then randomly says that since Belarus is now Russian territory and since France nuked it a week ago, that was considered a nuclear attack on Russian soil and decided to launch an all out nuclear attack on France in response which then prompts a NATO counter-launch with ends the world.
Just saying that might be possible.

I’m sure they’re not going to nuke their own inbound strike, though. Mission coordination is easier within a single country’s armed forces.
It’s when multiple uncoordinated parties attack the same targets you can get fratricide.
France wll send up an exploratory firework saying they surrender. That is about as aggressive as they will ever get.
NATO is largely a fiction where the US steps in and takes care of everything. I would be interested to see what the plan is if the US does not take care of everything. How much money are the individual NATO countries investing in their own defense? Just waiting for the US? What is the plan if they don’t come, then what?
Russia is also very weak and hasn’t been able to take over a rebelious state, a bit smalller than Texas, called Ukrane, with Trillions of defense dollars from the US. The next Russian collapse is on the horizon. And they cannot afford this Ukrane war or any new conflict.
France, Russia, and the US all exist in the same world economy. The war will end. None of the people involved will like it. Thats the rules.
Since the USA can be vetoed, the USA does not take care of everything.
