Freaks & Geeks Question

Alright, so I know this is an old show, but I see there is a fan base here, and it is generally regarded as a great, but short-lived series.

I am more than halfway through it, and one thing really bothers me about it. From the first episode, Lindsey is introduced to the freaks by Daniel, but how did Lindsey know Daniel at that point? It is implied that she has had some kind of relationship with him in the past. The whole show kinda hinges on that. Do we ever find out? Am I making a big deal about nothing?

Hmm…without rewatching the episode, I’m going with…

Lindsey was pretty freaked out by her grandmothers death, so was probably quite angsty and upset around that time. She also took to constantly wearing that jacket at the same time, which probably signified a change in her attitude which Daniel noticed.

Also, there’s an odd quirk in this show in which Lindsay (the brain) shares several classes with the freaks. Highly unlikely in that time frame. Daniel’s later explanation of the track system is pretty spot-on; you had the college-bound kids at the top, the job-bound kids in the middle, and the remedial/“hopeless” kids at the bottom.

So it’s more than a little jarring to see Lindsay in classes (other than, say, gym or homeroom) with Kim and Nick.

But anyway, they might have had classes together. I don’t think it’s ever specifically made clear how Lindsay and Daniel knew each other. But I don’t think it was a relationship.

I think Lindsay is attracted to Daniel and has a crush on him, but she never really acts on it. I’m pretty sure they never had any previous relationship other than, “I know that guys is Daniel and I am attracted to him.” I imagine it’s like being aware of some guy you’re attracted to at school even though you may not know him well. The guy (Daniel) kind of picks up on it, but he’s with someone else, but wants to include you in the group because “hey, who knows? Maybe one day?” and I am sure Lindsay’s okay with that too.

I think this is a pretty good explanation to my question. btw, I didn’t mean they had a previous romantic relationship, just some kind of interaction and budding friendship prior to episode 1.

I am enjoying the show a lot. Wish it had more of a season long arc to it (or maybe there is, but I haven’t picked up on it yet). Episodes seem to ignore a lot of what happened in previous episodes. That would be my only, very minor, complaint.

I just finished watching the whole show, and I noticed this in the beginning too. As it goes on, the characters get a lot more depth and longer storyline arcs, and by the end of the season you REALLY wish there was more. I do like the ending though.

I think Lindsay had a crush on Daniel up until the “Tests and Breasts” episode, when she realized that he was a bit of a scummy person. That didn’t prevent her from ending the friendship though.

I think she realized she had no shot after the party she threw. She found Daniel and Kim Kelly making out in her bed. mshar253’s example is what nailed that coffin shut. I always assumed they sort of knew each other simply marginally before the first episode and Daniel sensed a new recruit. Her obvious crush on the “guy with the bedroom eyes and the stringy hair” along with her angst at her Grandmother’s death made her a natural fit with the Freaks.

Nah, there were still classes that everyone had to take, like geography and things like that. They didn’t have different “levels” of geography (no “honors” or “AP”) so the classes ended up with a cross-section of students. There were folks in my geography class that I wouldn’t have come into contact with in any of my other classes.

Hm, not in my junior high and high school here in Wisconsin, right next to Michigan where F&G is set, in the early 1980s. I was in a “track” program from 7th grade onward. Never saw kids from the other “tracks” in classes except homeroom and maybe gym, and even then scheduling seemed to dictate that you always had the kids from your track in all classes. I was a Lindsay; never had “freaks” in my classes.

But I recognize that it may have been different elsewhere.

Kim and Lindsay are in the same English class. I remember (I think) a scene where Lindsay harshly criticized On the Road in defense of Kim. This doesn’t seem quite right, now that I think of it, because Lindsay seems like the type who would have been in Honors English, and Kim does not, but you have to suspend disbelief for the sake of the story, I guess.

Outside of some Math and Science, there weren’t much in the way of Honors classes at my high school. You had a normal cross-section of students in most classes. This was in Northwestern Illinois, early to mid 90’s.

I did go to high school and jr. high in Michigan during the early 80s, and like interface2x said, math and science got tracked. Everything else not so much. I had freaks in my English class, as well as history.
