Free copy of Duke Nukem 3D atomic edition from GOG!

Until Dec. 14 you can get a free copy of Duke Nukem 3D atomic edition and yes, this is a full copy. I just wanted to give people a head’s up

I downloaded it earlier today.

Is there any way to customize the keyboard controls? Because holy shit, I am not at all used to PC FPS set-ups from the 90s.

WOW!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Does this run on modern systems? Isn’t DN3D one of the games that requires an intermediate software platform on Win7 etc.?

I have a legit copy here and my son has installed and played it, but I know he had to find such emulators and patches to make some of my old junk run on new systems. If this is a patched version that will run directly it’s worth grabbing.

“Borrrn to be Wi-i-i-ild!”

It will work up to Windows 8.

Good Old Games installs a preconfigured DOSBox dealy with the games so you don’t have to worry about setting anything up.

I am on 64-bit Windows 7, I downloaded it, unzipped it, ran the installer and was playing with no trouble. Except for the wacky keyboard.

EDIT: And if you feel like spending money, don’t forget to grab EDuke32. It is a nice mod, of sorts, for Duke Nukem that improves resolution and such.

It should work; GoG uses DOSBox to make old games run on newer systems. It works fine most of the time, and none of the comments seem to complain it doesn’t work.

Yeah, there’s a Game set up option on the first menu you get when you click on Duke Nukem 3D.

(Btw this game also works on a mac! Cheers!)

I’m playing it now on a Winwdos 7 machine - no problem!

Thanks for the heads-up. Never played the game, but “Free” fits within any budget, so there you go…

Wait, is it in-game or somewhere else? Because other than “options” in the main screen in-game, I don’t see any sort of “game” or “set up” button for me to be clicking on.

It really is a great game - you’ll love it.

Where the Set-Up Button Is Located

This is where it is on a Mac, I don’t know about the PC version of it.

Nope, doesn’t help. I get nothing like that when starting the game. Thanks though.

Very cool. I feel old; I still think of it as a “recent” game.

Eh, I never really liked it. I wanted a new Duke platformer, not an FPS. Pus, I still have a copy on CD in a closet somewhere.

If nothing else, since it runs in DOSBox, there’s a built in keymapper by pressing Ctrl-F1 in-game. It’s a bit weird (but just a bit) to use, so here are the instructions.

I’m getting the game right now, so I’ll check and see if I can figure out another way to do this.

I bought it when it first came out. Like many “3d” games, it has aged much worse than 2d games. Much, much worse.

As I suspected, there’s a Settings option in the Start Menu entry. If you’re on Windows 8, the easiest way to see that would be to right click on the tile in the Start Screen and choose “Show Location” (or similar). Or you can right click on an empty space in that Screen and click All Apps, then have fun scrolling until you find it.

One last thing: I found out that running the game in DOSBox really isn’t the best way of doing things. Like a lot of old shooters, there’s an open source Windows/Mac port. Furthermore, there’s a high resolution pack for that port.

While I’m personally going to use it because I can’t get the resolution above 320x240 and run smoothly on DOSbox on my netbook, I’m sure a lot of you have HD-capable monitors and would like to play at higher resolutions with rendered 3D, and with lots of fancy texturing goodies.

Correction: the HRP can only be used with the vanilla Duke3D because it comes with the Windows port. Thus there are no limitations if you haven’t downloaded the port, except on Macs and Linux, where it won’t work at all.
