If I want to make some “mixtape” style CDs, with layered transitions between songs instead of gaps, is there any free software that will do that for me? If not free, what’s the best, most affordable, payware?

Audacity is an open source audio editor with a large variety of functions and effects. I don’t think it has a burning option (at least the older version I’m using doesn’t), but you should be able to create the effects you want, including transition between tracks, with Audacity and burn it to a CD with conventional bruning software.
