Just a thought, have you considered trying Craigslist / ReUseIt / Freecycle to get someone to take this? I moderate a local Freecycle community and it’s basically an exchange to keep stuff out of landfills. I’ve gotten rid of a bunch of junk this way, and so far have had very good experiences.

Good luck. Typewriters are hard to get rid of. We tried not long ago to get rid of a genuine IBM Correcting Selectric, complete with a pile of ribbons, correction tape and three balls, and the service tag showing it had been cleaned and checked out about six months before we tried getting rid of it.

Even for free, nobody wanted it. We kept listing it, and even tried taking it to a charity thrift store. Recognizing an albatross, they politely rejected it, pointing to the three Selectrics they already had.

Eventually, a friend of a friend called up asking if we still had it and if we’d be willing to donate it to the school they worked at. Eureka! After 14 long months, the thing was finally out of the garage!

Tried Craig’s List but no response. I hate to through the thing away. I just keep remembering my wire recorder or my telegraph receiver which are lost forever. Retrieved the thing out of the dumpster but it may go back if I can’t find a home for it. It’s too old to be of use.

It’s a 1938 model.

Mods, if it isn’t too much trouble could you put 1938 in the title? I just found out the model year.

I just wanted to post to say I love the combination of your thread title and username:

Wow. My Oma (god rest her) had one a lot like that. I remember having to adjust to the steep key pitches.

I still have an old Smith&Corona electric one in my childhood closet with a couple of ribbons. Freecycle will probably have to do it.

Ooooh! If you don’t mind snailing it to me, I’ll take it! I wanna use it to make one of these!

I’d love it, but I would not love the shipping charge.

You’re kidding right? Know anyone in Nashville coming to Disney?

I’ll pay for shipping. (It can’t weigh more than 30 lbs., can it?) What you could do, is tear it apart, sell the mechanicals on eBay, and take the body to a scrap metal dealer. That’d get you a couple of bucks for the thing, and would keep it from winding up in a landfill.
