How successful financially are people who provide (valuable) freeware but solicit donations? Does this set up guarantee lots of downloads with minimal return or do people actually put a few bucks in the kitty? I’m considering a few things re retirement supplication.

I only have knowledge of one case of this, but the developer I know of received exactly one donation (5 bucks, I think) for a fairly popular download.
I also have very limited experience with donationware, but in my experience you’re not going to make much money from it.
I’m not sure that’s what you meant to say… 
I once read a report that said less than 4 tenths of one percent donate. (I cannot find it online though, so I have not cite.)
Well, I guess prayer can’t hurt but I really meant to say that I need to supplement my retirement income, as in I need more money, gimme money, that’s what I want.
