Well, I’m in the final week of packing up to move out. Uncle Sam’s gonna come take my sofas, endtables, bed, armoire. . . the big stuff. However, at the same time I’m packing all of my small “need it now” stuff into a non-climate controlled storage unit.
And I still have over $100 worth of food in canned goods: soup, sauces, beans, etc. Now the dry stuff I’m not worried about. Stuff in glass jars is going to be thrown out or given away. But the stuff in cans, can it be stored in freezing temperatures?

Tip #1: Old Christmas wrappin’ paper makes good cushioning material in your boxes.
Aw hell, I’m always up for an adventure. Even if it’s into the culiary-gastrointestinal distress type.
Seriously though, based on that, I don’t think I’ll be taking any chances. I’ll give all my stuff to the kid across the hall (he’s in my unit too, but he’s got a wife that’s staying behind).

Sh*t, that guys getting, like, $75 in groceries!
Seems to me your biggest worry would be that the contents would expand during freezing and potentially bust the can open. I think giving it away is the best solution.
