Fresh Meat (Sorry Uke, this ain't about new a butcher)

I think most people here like putting the lie to these e-mail lists of “facts.” Here’s a bunch of them I received earlier today. I corrected the spelling errors and deleted the more egregious ones. The rest I give to you; have at 'em folks.

My humble contribution - I just checked a deck of cards and the king of hearts is the only king without a moustache.

Alright, anyone who can conclusively tell me if Marilyn Monroe had 6 toes or not gets one free Blow Pop. (no euphemisms, please.) When in doubt, resport to bribery.

My niece has 5-1/2 toes on one foot.
Her big toe has two bones. She’s still only two months old, but in a couple of months she’ll have it removed, so she won’t need orthopedic shoes all her life.

I don’t see how all of them can beep with the same note, but I’ll take my guitar tuner out tonight and check it.

Unprovable, but I’ll buy it. I’ve bene on TV no less than 5 seperate times. OK, New Hampshire Public Television… but it still qualifies!

Possibly true for certain varieties of oak, but in my experience, the oaks in my front yard growing up were considerably less than 50 years old, and produced acorns.

As far as I know, Venus IS the only planet with a retrograde rotation. Hey, even chance says you get one right once in a while.

Patently wrong. I believe I have seen KISS pez dispensers, but this seems wrong at face value.

All, or nearly all, presidents are old men. All, or nearly all, old men need glasses. This doesn’t seem so weird. A weirder fact is that 4 of the last 5 presidents have been left handed. (Ford, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton)

possibly true, but unverifiable. Another fallacy was that Walt Disney could actually draw. He couldn’t.

Unc:**

Hey, atsa funny! My old butcher, Dominic, he talk like-a that, too!

Sadly, I actually know what dust is made of. I did a research paper on it in college. Common household dust does contain, among other things, a small portion of dead skin but the primary component of dust is the Dust Mite (Dermatophagoides farinae).

The dust mite is a sightless, eight-legged creature that feeds primarily on shedded skin cells. Yes, there are dust mites in your bed, munching happily on your dead skin but NO, dust mites do not make up half the weight of your mattress.

Dust also contains quite a bit of cellulose, regular dirt, triglycerides (released when cooking) and rubber.

I’ll shut up now so you won’t realize how Cliff Clavin I am.

I saw a picture recently that was taken before MM got the spare toes removed. And a closeup of her foot in which you could see where they would have been. If I could just remember where…

A Boeing 747’s wingspan is longer than the Wright brothers’ first flight.

True

747-400 wing span 212 feet.
Wright Brothers first flight 120 feet in 12 seconds at a ground speed of 6.8 mph and an air speed of 30 mph.

I can’t find any reference to the whole toe thing on the referenced web page, but I suppose you could e-mail the photographer if you really wanted to. It sounds to me like the tabloid made something up. Shocking!

Confirmed.

Debatable. Assuming “counterclockwise” means “in the same direction as Earth”, Venus’s obliquity is 178 degrees, so it clearly qualifies for clockwise rotation. Uranus, however, is also a strong contender, having an obliquity of 97.9 degrees. That’s just enough to make it appear to rotate sort of clockwise as well.

Well, I once broke the head off a Pez dispenser and sent it to a friend in France as an authentic “Marie Antoinette” Pez. Does that count?

obliquity 122 degrees. Another strong contender. That is, if you consider Pluto a planet.

Jayron–re: Walt Disney. You’re exagerating Walt’s (lack of) skills. Walt could draw fine; he was a trained draftsman. Walt just wasn’t in the same league as Ub Iwerks, his long-time associate. Early on Walt realized he should leave the drawing up to Ub and company, while he focused on the business.

Hey, Unc! You do this to keep some of the guys out of the parties?

<No piece of paper can be folded more than 7 times.>

Not true. I’ve folded a piece of paper more than seven times. I believe Cecil also did an article on this one.

<Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes.>

What raging donkeys do you know of? Last I heard there weren’t any donkeys on steroids or with sniper rifles.

<1 in every 4 Americans has appeared on television.>

I’ve been on at least three times. My sisters have both been on at least once. I’m not positive about my mother, and fairly certain my father has not. My brother has not. So that’s 3/6=1/2. Get six people who haven’t been on television and you have yourself a case.

<You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television.>

I find this hard to believe. You are at least keeping your eyes open when you watch tv, whereas you’re not using much more than your autonomic nervous system when you sleep. Heck, even eating while you watch tv is burning calories.

<Oak trees do not produce acorns until they are fifty years of age or older.>

I can’t conclusively verify this, but I don’t think that’s true across the board.

<Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning.>

Define “efficient.”

<The 57 on the Heinz ketchup bottle represents the number of varieties of pickles the company once had.>

Cecil also did a column on this one and I think the 57 refers to the number of products the company had out at the time, or something close to it. I also remember him saying something about how the guy who chose the logo thought 57 was a cool number, since at the time the company technically had like 63 products or something. Whatever.

<The plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called aglets.>

I read that in a book of made-up words once. It might be true. I just threw out my dictionary today so I can’t verify that.

<Adolf Hitler’s mother seriously considered having an abortion but was talked out of it by her doctor.>

In a somewhat related story, Adolf Hitler was part Jewish. His Jewish grandfather (“bob”) abused Hitler’s father (“john”) which is one reason Hitler hated Jews. I believe Cecil covered this in one article as well.

As a Barbie collector, I can state with absolute certainty that this is quite true.

Hey!

I was a planet long before your skinny butt showed up around here!
