Probably a stupid question - a friend of mine is leaving tonight for a 2 week trip to the UK. Should she be concerned in any way about the Brexit vote results? Riots, anything like that expected? Thanks.
Stock up on toilet paper, ready for the apocalypse.
Maybe “riots” was too strong. Protests, demonstrations at big tourist sites, anything like that to watch out for? Or now that the vote is over, will things just be normal?
Get a lot more pounds for your dollar at the foreign exchange office, making everything cheaper.
As of right now, the pound is down 8% against the dollar, from yesterday’s rate, at $1.378.
Should be absolutely normal. BBC news probably best if they want to get any updates. Riots or even protests I think are extremely unlikely.
For the most part, the people who would’ve been more likely to cause trouble over the outcome of the Brexit vote are the same idiots who voted in favor of leaving, and thus have nothing to be upset about.
I would say minor protests aren’t that unlikely, personally, I doubt there’s likely to be anything big or relevant, but some places will protest the drop of a hat. Certainly no problems are likely for tourists. Tourism hasn’t been an issue for either campaign.
My mate and I (English chaps with a combined age over 120 :)) reacted to Brexit by:
- predicting Cameron would resign
- having some lunch
- getting ready for a weekend of roleplaying
Remember we’ve withstood the Blitz, Suez, Night of the Long Knives etc.
All that will happen is that Brexit will be discussed a lot - but how England do in Euro 2016 (soccer) and against the Aussies (Rugby) will soon take over as the topic du jour.
Also the streets will be quiet and us Brits will continue to queue politely.
Wait until she get there to exchange U.S. dollars for British pounds. The pound is falling, falling, falling! (She will get more pounds for her dollars.)
Be sure to take the train back to the continent as soon as you can before the cement trucks arrive at the channel tunnel and start filling it up.
You should absolutely stop your friend from traveling there at any cost. All the billionaires, like George Soros, are going to be out rioting in the streets because they will only make hundreds of millions in profit instead of billions. Those poor poor bastards.
What color is your friend’s skin?
In the US, one often hears that the level of drunken violence in British city centers is more than an American would be accustomed to, even on an ordinary weekend. There may be even more this weekend simply due to unfocused revelry or rue.
It will be too late. His visa will be invalid by then anyway. He’ll never get back home.
Nonsense! You stock up on toilet paper for the apoocalypse.
Amusingly, she packs her own because she’s generally unhappy with foreign hotel toilet paper.
Hang on, the electricity’s just being cut o…
Well, possibly, the sky will fall in, there will be rioting on the streets and a general ugly mood among the populace.
Unlikely though, I think we’ll beat Iceland.
As with all situations, Mitchell and Webb have got the general idea covered
