The song Asshole by Denis Leary is my first.
Your body is a Wonderland by John Mayer is the last.
Last Number is 17 by Kings of Leon.
iTunes handles characters kind of oddly. So, the way I’d personally alphabetize:
First alphabetically: “AA XXX” by Peaches
Last alphabetically: “ZX81” by Pitchshifter
Accented Latin characters get alphabetized before non-accented characters, and then non-Latin characters are sorted after Latin characters, and are not mixed. Cyrillic is sorted after Latin, Hangul after Cyrillic, etc. Given this:
First overall non-numeric: “À Contre-Courant” by Alizée
Last overall non-numeric: “여자친구” by Girls’ Generation
First numerically: “1-3” by Boris the Sprinkler
Last numerically: “9th Street Bridge” by Bill Cosby (not a song, of course)
À l’avenir - Marc Déry
Zwei Lieder, op. 8, #2 - “Du machst mich allein”, by Anton Webern
1990 (Dance Mix) - Jean Leloup
First Alphabetically: “Aal Dwaley Ghup Haneyra” by Asif Bhatti (from the album Traditional Music from Pakistan)
Last Alphabetically: “Zooropa” by U2
First Numerically: “1-2-3” by Indigo Girls
Last Numerically: “99 Luftballoons” by Nena
As an aside- threads like this confirm my belief that Dopers aren’t like normal people. Thank God.
First: Academy Fight Song by Mission of Burma
Last: Zydeco Sont Pas Sale by Clifton Chenier
Last Numerically: 10538 Overture by ELO
Very first A: Abscheulicher! (From ‘The Very Best of Beethoven’ collection.)
First A that I actually recognized: Absence of the Heart, by Deana Carter
My only Z: Zero to Sixty, by Thomas Wade:
Last in my iTunes numerical order: 5 minutes, by Steve Fox
Fun!
Edited: My iTunes apparently sorts numbers lexicographically instead of strictly increasing. So my numeric songs come out as follows:
1976, Alan Jackson
1999, The Wilkinsons
2 am, Alexz Johnson
23 days, She-daisy
26 cents, The Wilkinsons
30 shades of blue, Lisa Brokop
360 degrees of you, She-daisy
455 Rocket, Kathea Mattea
5 minutes, Steve Fox
Alphabetically, Marty Robbins has the first and last slots:
Ain’t I The Luck One
Yours (Quiereme Mucho)
Only one song with a numerical title:* 5:15* from The Who’s “Greatest Hits Live”.
First: The Abduction of Margaret by The Decemberists
Last (alphabetically): The Zephyr Song by The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Last (numerically): 5000 Ways to Die by Nerf Herder
I had wondered if there might be a term for this annoying habit - lexicographically. It drives me crazy when I construct playlists of things like song cycles or sonatas, and you end up with 1st, 11th, 12th, 13th, 2nd… Sorta like that episode of ‘Mad About You’ where she sorts the books by colour - GAH!
It’s okay, I’m used to it now, and make all my playlists and folders go 01, 02, 03, etc., but it still feels like I’m accommodating the stupid kid in the class.
First: “A.A. Cameron’s Strathspey/Mrs. Martha Knowles/The Pitnacree Ferryman” - an Irish folk medley by Silly wizard.
Last (alphabetically): “Zoo Station,” by U2
Last (numerically): “900 Miles” by Cisco Houston, off an album of Woodie Guthrie covers.
Alphabetically first song: “Adios Muchachos” (tango - uncredited)
Alphabetically last song: “When Love Comes to Town” (U2 & B.B. King)
Numbered song: “32 Flavors” (Ani Difranco)
A-Tisket, A-Tasket, Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack, ‘Hawaiian Swing’
Zuviel Hitze, Falco, ‘Einzelhaft’
500 Miles, Peter Paul & Mary, ‘Peter Paul & Mary’
Not the hippest tunes on my iPod, but that’s what they are alphabetically.
First: Abacab, Genesis
Last (alphabetically): Zig Zag, George Harrison
Last (numerically): 10538 Overture, Electric Light Orchestra
First alphabetically: A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
Last alphabetically: Youth by Matisyahu
Last numerically: 5446 That’s My Number/Ball and Chain by Sublime
First alphabetically: Abdul and Cleopatra - Johnathan Richman
Last alphabetically: Zoot Suit - The Who (or The High Numbers)
Last numerically: 999 - Keith Richards
First: Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows
Last: You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away by The Beatles
First: Abandoned - Lucinda Williams
Last: Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes
Last Numerically: 4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy) - Springsteen
First: Abacab, Genesis
Last: Yyz, Rush
Last Numerically: 99 Luftballons, Nena
I don’t have any ‘Z’ songs. Huh, never noticed that before.
A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
Zurich Is Stained by Pavement
99% of Us Is Failure by Matthew Good
I never noticed it before, but I have a lot of songs that start with numbers.
