From The Earth To The Moon is playing on The Science Channel. Anyone watching it?
No, but I have the DVDs. No commercials!
Same here, but I’m watching it anyway. good series.
I watched the first couple of episodes. It’s still good, although it appears that they trimmed some of it to run with commercials, which is a little disappointing. I may just pop in one of my old tapes of it to watch, since my favorite episode “1968” is set to air next.
Of course, seeing Stephen “Milton from Office Space” Root as a flight controller was a bit weird, but hey…the guy’s got range
(P.S…did anyone notice that Bravo was running Apollo 13 tonight? I mean, I know they show it once a month, practically, but…competition, perhaps?)
(P.P.S…sorta old news, but…rest in peace Wally Schirra )
I tried watching it on the Science Channel, but couldn’t stand the commercials so I popped in my DVDs. They really cut out quite a bit to make room for the ads.
And I agree, “1968” is my absolute favorite. Nothing beats that recreation of Earthrise.
One cut that really irked me was the brief scene where Deke Slayton and Gus Grissom are walking down a road, casually (they had been hunting) discussing crew assignments for the Apollo 1 mission. For anyone who knew what eventually happened to that crew, this made for a creepy - but good - bit of foreshadowing. They also cut out pretty much every scene with astronauts Bassett and See, so that when they are killed in the plane crash, the uninitiated might wonder, “okay…WHO were those guys again?”
Still, it’s nice to see that series get some airtime. It would be nice if the Science Channel would run it commercial-free, since basically all the ads were spots for the Channel itself.
No, I’m not watching it. But, thanks for reminding me to get my DVDs back from the friend who borrowed them.
Since others have metioned that they’re editing them, I’ll probably skip the Science Channel screening.
Since I have the DVDs I wasn’t watching the series that closely. Now that you mention it though, the episodes did seem to go a bit fast.
One thing that always bothered me about the show was Ted Levine as Alan Shepard. Levine has a ‘snuffly face’ and he looks nothing like Shepard. (I also wish they’d gotten a period correct Skyhawk instead of the mid-'70s one.)
I love, love, love this series and have the DVDs also. My favorite episode is the Al Bean one, followed closely by the one about the construction of the various LEMs.
I will dig up the DVDs and watch them since you guys have reminded me what a great series it is.
Best mini-series ever! I recently met Andy Chaikin, who wrote the book the series was based on. Very interesting guy.
One of my questions to him was, which actor did the best job portraying the real astronaut? His said the guy playing Frank Borman had him totally nailed. “He was the MVP of the whole series.”
I saw it in its first run on HBO in 1999. TNT or TBS (can’t remember which) also ran it as a 12-hour marathon a few years ago which I recorded on my DVR and watched at my leisure. Excellent series, I really enjoyed it both times I watched it. I can’t really work myself up to watch it this time around, though.
