Front room curtains - open or closed?

My front window is about 15’ from the sidewalk on a city street. I have curtains, which I close in the summer to stop the sun and try to keep the house cool, but mostly they are left open and I rely on the overgrown houseplants to block much of the window and provide a bit of privacy at night.

Ditto. I doubt anyone would climb in through my front window, though. The front window is over a holly bush.

It feels weird to have the blinds open at night. I’ve never been good with it. Blame that In Search Of… episode with Bigfoot.

Depends on the season and time of day. Any time of the year, I like them closed after dark. I feel like I’m in a fishbowl otherwise. Summer afternoons/evenings it’s too hot to leave them open…they need to block out the heat. Other times of the year or in the mornings during the day, I will have them open.

I didn’t vote because I keep the curtains in the front room open all day and most of the night, but close them when it’s closer to bedtime. Not WHEN I go to bed, but about an hour before. My window is ON the sidewalk next to a short flight of steps down to the mailbox and the manager’s apartment. He has a little area where he cooks outdoors and has a lot of people over. So there’s a lot of traffic outside my window most nights. Since noise doesn’t bother me (I find the presence of a lot of people around me comforting even though I’m not really interacting with them most of the time), I like the situation. Once it gets quiet, I like the curtains closed. I think I feel that at 7-9 or 10 pm, if you’re peeking into my windows, someone’s going to see you and alert me. Much later, peeping is easy.

No, I don’t think anyone would really get off on watching a middle aged woman watch baseball, but I’ve caught more than one peeping tom. You may think you feel like someone watching you sit and watch tv or cook dinner is pretty harmless, but you might be surprised to find out how you really feel when it’s happened.

I have a big picture window in my front room, and while i have sheers that cover most of them, the sheers are only used to block the sun in the summer. If my neighbors, out walking their dogs, want to watch me watching TV, then they are welcome to.

This (or sometimes the sheer curtain he open as well), until around nightfall, when we usually close the opaque curtains as well (you’re more “on display” when it’s dark out and the interior lights are on you).

There’s no “it depends” poll option, so I didn’t vote. The general rule I like to follow is to have the blinds open if it’s light out, closed if it’s dark out. This often means that I’ll have the blinds open in the evenings if it’s summer, but closed if it’s winter. Though if you want to be realistic, the real answer is “however I’ve decided to leave them,” because the only time I open or close the blinds is when I’m actually hanging out in the living room. If I walk in and then go to the kitchen, or the bathroom, or the bedroom, then I really don’t care how the blinds are left.

I have miniblinds that let in TONS of light and I can keep them closed all the time.

Curtains at least partially open during the day, closed at night. Not sure how to vote that…

The curtains are drawn but the furniture is real.
