Froterism? Frautersim?

My coworker once told me about a weird guy on the bus who would sit next to her and ‘undulate’. Her daughter just took a long bus ride, so she was telling me about her daughter’s trip with a couple of examples of weird people. She brought up this guy on the commuter bus again and said, ‘You know there’s a name for that? It’s called Froterism.’

Having never heard the word before I wanted to look up a definition. I guessed at the spelling and didn’t find anything useful.

How is it spelled, and is there an article about the condition?

The act in question is called frottage and a connoisseur of this pastime is a frotteur.

frotteurism (no longer called frottage)

Thanks!

Yes, the word (at least its use in English) goes back to that bible of all weird sexual practices, Krafft-Ebing’s Psychopathia Sexualis.

From OED:

It’s a delightful word to know, isn’t it? I’d never heard of it until the movie Flirting With Disaster came out, which not only used it, but had a character define it. (This was just the sort of detail that distinguished that flick in terms of quality and quirkiness.)

And if the DSM-IV doesn’t recommend, as an initial treatment option for frotteurism, a swift knee to the offender’s groin, it damn well should.

Assuming the frotteur is male.
