The primary cause of Hamas is to follow the tenets of their interpretation of their religion, which includes no accomadation with the Jews and strive for their destruction. An all out war would obviously end that objective.
Besides, the sacrifice they endure to keep this up will count for them when they reach paradise. They know what they are doing.

The Government of Ireland perhaps didn’t exactly want an active part in the war, and there are reasons for much of that, but there were many Irishmen who volunteered to fight as part of the British Army, and many others who worked for bodies like the Red Cross and in the Merchant Marine etc. The UK/Ireland relationship is a long and complex and entangled one, and even nowadays the British Army recruits Irish citizens.

To prevent further offense on an obviously sensitive topic, let us draw a clear line between the populace and it’s government. My comments are mostly directed toward governments.
It’s been clear to me since the failed Camp David accord nearly 30 years ago, that the extreme factions of the Palestinians will settle for nothing less than the destruction of Israel. There could be peace, prosperity, and freedom in the region by now if they were willing to stop the butchering. But no. Given that, Israel has every right to defend itself.
The tragedy is all of the regular folks who are caught in the middle. Entire lifetimes are wasted waiting for a resolution. This will continue until the majority of the population turns against violence. Any solution must be based firmly on the bedrock of Palestinians policing themselves to prevent attacks. But the large numbers of idle young men and the inflammatory hate speech that passes as sermons makes this unlikely.
The US will continue to support Israel because it needs an ally in the region, and because of the strong Jewish vote. In the end, Israel and Palestine will work it out mostly between themselves. I suspect it will go on for centuries.

Since it’s obvious by now that Hamas is not going away and can’t be marginalized, why won’t the Israelis just treat with them, and promise to accept the results of any election that returns a Hamas government for the PA?
What they need to do is either (1) annex the Territories outright and extend Israeli citizenship and voting rights to all Palestinians, or (2) implement a real two-state solution and clear all Israeli settlers out of the WB, everywhere east of the Green Line, and withdraw the IDF from any attempt to control Palestine or its borders with states other than Israel. One or the other. The status quo sux, for both parties.

Because Hamas is not interested in peace with Israel. Hamas is not interested in ending the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians with Israel still in existance. Hamas has nothing to offer Israel. Why should Israel treat with them?
Casdave, people/nations can ‘choose not to hear the bugle call’ because they are pacifists, because they can’t afford the massive amount of money needed for a war, or because they’re not poodles who roll over and copy everything another country does. Ireland had and has every right to stay neutral in any conflict, just as Britain had and has every right not to. As for sucking your dick, my gob may be big enough, but I doubt your dick is.
As to Palestine/Israel/Hamas, I too get tired of the attitude that anyone criticising Israel only does so for anti-semetic reasons, or because we’re all a bunch of EU liberals. Objecting to civilians getting murdered while going about their day? What an anti Jewish handwringing European bunch of pussies we are!
