Fuck Opera browser (mild)

When you open a new tab you can have it show thumbnails of favotire sites and you can click to them right from there. Here’s a screenshot.

Ah, I remember now. I disabled that as soon as I saw it :p.

Well, what did you expect in an Opera. A happy ending?

I feel your pain about web browsers. I’ve been having more and more problems with them lately but I can’t quite work up a pit thread yet, although Mozilla web browsers are getting me on the verge.

But anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say I’d love it if my browser wouldn’t play music on Myspace or at least had an option to turn it off.

I agree. Just the fact that Myspace allows people to have music and videos that play every time you load their page pisses me off. Like I said though, I have friends who make music and only post it on Myspace, so for that reason I wish the player was a little more reliable in Opera.

I’ve had a problem like this before. I had to click the “log in” button instead of hitting the “return” key.

It apparently only happens with myspace, and absolutely nothing else. And I haven’t noticed it for many months, possibly because I just hit the button by instinct now.

I reconsidered and decided to give it a shot after hearing you say you loved it. I think I like it.

Here’s what’s cool about it: Say I’m typing a post or an email and I want to look up a word to check the spelling or make sure it means exactly what I think it means. I hit ctrl+t (new window), ctrl+8 (my speed dial for m-w.com), type the word and hit enter, read the definition, and then hit ctrl+w (close window.) All told takes about 5 seconds and the best part is that I don’t have to touch the mouse. I don’t know of any other browser that can do this.

*I could do all this before speed dial but it took a few more keystrokes. I had to use the down arrow to scroll through my address history until I got to the site I wanted to go to.

For search stuff you can make it even easier than that, Cisco. Open up m-w.com, right click on the search field, and select “Create search…” It’ll ask for a keyword, which can be whatever you want (I’ll use “d” for this example). Pop your letter or word in there and you’re all set.

Now, to do your process above, Ctrl-T for a new tab, then type d whatever in the address bar. Voila, you’re taken to the definition of “whatever.”

Note - if the keyword you want is already in use, you can delete it in Tools > Preferences under the Search tab.

This is by far my favorite feature of the current Opera cycle (I think it debuted with 9.1, I don’t recall for sure). I have shortcuts set up for Google (g by default), Wikipedia, Filefront, Newegg, and at least a few others. It’s a really handy feature once you get used to it.

I think it’s been around a bit longer than that; at least version 6 IIRC. I know I’ve been using it for at least three years.

You can also use it for non-searchy things like forums, incidentally; I’ve got “sd” set up with the search string “http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/forumdisplay.php?f=%s”. That way I can just type “sd 5” at the address bar and come straight to the pit, or “sd 13” and go to CS. Means I have to remember the numbers of the forums I read, but that’s not difficult.

Nice tip, Dead Badger.

Actually, I have 10 custom searches already, but m-w.com happens to not work.

And custom searches are a new feature. Dead Badger is thinking of something else.

Also, I don’t like searching with the address bar because it clogs it up. I only type in a few webpages that I visit frequently. I get everywhere else from the search field.

No, I’m not. You’ve been able to do this through ini files for ages, but the “create search” UI option is relatively recent. I assure you, I have been using the custom search feature for a number of years.

I see, but you haven’t been able to right-click on a search box and click “Create Search” until 9.1.

Yes, I am perfectly aware of that. But that is just an interface nicety to let you at the pre-existing feature; you have been able to create custom searches as described since at least version 6, which is what I said. Indeed, creating your own custom searches by looking at the page code is a fair bit more reliable than using the “create search…” option, as you have discovered with M-W.

Speaking of which, you can get a Merriam-Webster search working if you use the string:

http://209.161.33.50/dictionary/%s

instead of the one that the “create search” option provides for you. That works at present; I have no idea how long that IP will remain valid for, and I can’t quite be bothered to find a more permanent hostname.

I meant to comment on this but forgot, but I’ve just been reminded because it’s happening right now.

I’m not sure if we’re having the same problem. What’s going on is that I’m trying to add someone as a friend.

-I start from my home page, click Search, and type in his name
-I click on his profile, and click ‘Add to friends’
-This takes me back to www.myspace.com , where it says You must be logged in to do that! above the username/password fields
-I log in again and it takes me to my home page
-Start over at step 1

It’s infuriating.

That’s one I’ve never had happen.

On an unrelated note, a complete stranger from Afghanistan just friend-requested me. A lesbian with no friends in common, schools, or jobs. I’m a man with a very Israeli last name. I can’t think of any plausible justification, or even how she’d find me.

That’s easy. Open up your hosts file an add this line:

127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com

No more music (or anything) from myspace again.

Ok, I’m kidding. In Opera go to tools > preferences > advanced. Find “content” and click the “manage site preferences” button. This will allow you to block content only from particular sites.

Start a new entry for myspace.com and block damn near everything.

If you’re going to browse somewhere, I can’t think of a much better place than the Fuck Opera.
