I could be wrong but the vast majority of gun owners support some level of gun control. The NRA’s membership constitutes around 5 percent of total gun owners which isn’t necessarily the same.
I wouldn’t join an oranization I disagree with only to change its leadership.

Under more rational circumstances I would have little problem with gun control. As it is I have a problem with it for three reasons:
One, gun control is a slippery slope and foot in the door to outright banning of guns, which is the end game the left obviously hopes to accomplish.
Two, and more importantly, estimates are that there are up to 350 million guns in this country and it would literally be impossible to account for and effectively police enough of them to effectively keep them out of the hands of criminals. Like the old cliche says, “Once guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns”.
And third, should the time come when the left actually manages to accomplish the outlawing of gun ownership, it would make everyone sitting ducks for the criminals who have them. For the criminally inclined, robberies, car-jackings, muggings and home intrusions all become significantly less risky and therefore more tempting when you’re armed and you know the odds are that your intended victims are almost certain to be unarmed.
Show me how you intend to keep existing firearms out of the hands of criminals and I’ll be happy to go along with attempts at gun control. But tell me that you hope to make it more difficult to for criminals to get guns by making it more difficult for law-abiding people to get them (or banning them outright) and I won’t even consider it. There are just too many millions of them floating around right now (and for that matter, importable from south of the border just like drugs) to ever keep them out of the hands of bad guys.

. . . and has worked pretty well in those countries that have tried it. Perhaps because guns are more difficult to conceal than drugs. Perhaps because it de-escalates things for the criminal element – if neither your rivals nor your victims are armed, why do you need to be?
And yet the simple fact that more people are killed with fists in this country than guns escapes you.
Maybe we should ban fists too while we’re at it…

Irrelevant if true. Banning guns would still significantly reduce the annual number of murders and accidental deaths. If people still die in fistfights, that’s a different problem. Just because there’s no vaccine for cancer doesn’t mean vaccination is useless.
Did those other countries that tried it start out having to get rid of 350 million guns as well as a significant drug and inner city crime driven population preying on each other and everyone else as well?
