(I mean, of course, there are usually pumps available. Just clarifying, in case there’s anybody else out there as smart-alecky as I am.)
Smart-alecs? Us? You must be thinking of some other board.
I’ve owned 7 cars, all German. All have their gas caps on the right side.
Just sayin’…
My 1974 Pontiac Ventura had this.
Current car: 1992 Mitsubishi Expo, gas cap on right. No problem pulling up to the left side of a pump, or, occasionally, pulling the hose all the way around when I have to. Sometimes you have to pull a little farther forward for it to reach, but I’ve never really had a problem.
2000 Grand Am, gas cap on the right. (My wife’s car.)
If you pull up so your tail is right at the pump, no one is going to be able to get in. Then pull the hose across. Our work cars used to be Tempos (cheapo Tauruses) and they had a gas cap on the right too - with the button to release the cover in the glove compartment. :dubious:
But you’d like one of the places I get gas. It is a convenience store, cheapest gas around, and it has two pumps in the middle of the driveway. Two left, two right, and if there is no one on the right cap side when you have a left cap car, you do a tricky uturn in the lot to back up into it. Bad place to buy gas usually, except when you go after 9 pm. But good for right cap cars.
Saab - right side.
Get gas at Costco - where everyone must go in from one side and the gas is cheaper. The right side lines are generally shorter, too.
Everywhere I’ve gassed up at has long enough hoses to reach the left side of my car, no matter which side of the pump I use. I don’t drive a particularly narrow vehicle (Pontiac Gran Prix), either. I just have to keep my hand on the hose so that it doesn’t pull the nozzle out.
Mitsubishi Galant. Gas cap on the right. Before that I had a Mitsubishi Mirage, gas cap also on the right (what? I’m a Mitsubishi fan, okay?) I’ve never had the problem you describe either. There are pumps facing both ways here and I just pull into whatever one will work. The only station here that consistently has a line is the one at Costco, but there, they make all the cars pull in from one side, so you’d never get any potential head ons.
Two modes of transportation. Ford gas tank on Left. Chrysler gas tank on right. When at a gas station I have to think about it(ggod think the Chrysler has a little arrow) I also want to know why auto makers aren’t putting them on the same side. I sure would make it easier to drive in gas up and get out.
