Thats what happens when you get a prima donna to sing your anthem. Why not do like other countries and let the crowd sing?? It sounds a lot better to have a stadium full of patriots sing than someone out there doing for selfish reasons. I find the American national anthem is usually over-performed by the person chosen. It looks ridiculous to have someone like that who tries to feign passion, but doesn’t really give a s#!t.
The crowd does sing if the singer isn’t going off on ridiculous tangents. Check out the Whitney Houston version linked upthread. (The best rendition by far in IMO.)

Assuming you’re right, who the fuck cares? We’re talking about styles of singing, not whether the songs were sung live. Aquilera’s crapfest would have sounded just as bad recorded in a studio, even with the right words.
I fucking agree. But part of the fucking point was that singing it fucking live and fucking it up was part of the fucking point! I think it sounded like fucking shit.
But since fucking people are fucking saying that Whitney’s fucking version was so fucking awesome, I felt obliged to point out that it was fucking lip synced.

Whitney Houston had the best ever anthem at a super bowl. Sadly her future crack whore status ruins it all, but if you want to know what the anthem should be sung like you have to check out that performance.
For whatever it’s worth, she apparently did not make a mistake during the same portion of the anthem during rehearsal.
