Well, if he exposes her in a later episode after the believers are roped in to always watching, then it has even more impact.
And even that show was teaching children that dogs can speak English, sending mixed messages at best.
Not a bad idea for a story hook.
Also, Leslie Hope looks good with hair.
ambushed You’re a fucking idiot.
To this point, it’s been entirely on the skeptic side. Van Pelt (the rookie ingenue) & Rigsby (the big stupid Brit) are believers, & look like saps next to Jane, who mocks them.
I think that drm caught the meaning of my post although I was originally referring to you – and teasing just a bit.
Two quotes from you:
Originally, at least, the true skeptic was one who was uncertain or doubtful. She or he withheld a determination of the truth.
Actually I thought the show was fairly clear that she was bogus. The very fact that Jane commented on how she could have found out all of the information that she had without being psychic was enough. Also, her enormous fees were exploitive. (That’s why I mentioned them in my comment.)
Maybe regular viewers have just come to trust Jane’s viewpoints more quickly.
I think the two male side characters are pretty funny and can be fleshed out well. But the woman is written without any personality.
In contrast, look at every character that is new to the team each week on Bones. Every one of them is fresh as the crack of dawn. Good writing and good acting.
The woman teamed with Jane is getting nowhere fast. Is it just the writing?
I like Second Stone’s idea of completely exposing the fraudulent psychic later in the season so that anyone who has bought into her BS has a rude awakening.
This is not to say that I don’t believe in premonitions.
But if I type something like “GMB’s heart attack” there have to be thousands of people with those initials who would read that and think I have had a premonition about them when I hadn’t. But I could always point back to it and say “See! I told you so!”
FWIW, there’s nothing in that episode that even hinted to me that she was supposed to have real powers.
Agreed. Anyone who enjoys the show wouldn’t take anything else from what was presented.
Reported.
Okay, now I feel like an idiot. Sorry, Mswas. I honestly forget this thread was in the Pit instead of Cafe Society. (Aside from the OP and your insult to Ambushed, it’s been like a normal CS thread.)
ETA: I’ve now reported my own post.
For duty or what?
I agree that Jane did not believe her. He seemed a bit rattled earlier in the show from his argument with Van Pelt (who is kind of coming across as an idiot. I mean, its one thing to take comfort in the thought of an afterlife, but something else to believe some random lady when your co-worker is telling you what she’s doing) and from the killer’s statement, “A parent is supposed to protect their children.”
Yeah; van Pelt must bring some kind of skills to the team, but her credulity about supernatural crap is a little disconcerting in an investigator.
I just noticed that every episode has the word “Red” in the title.
That’s in reference to Red John in the pilot ep, the guy who killed his family.
I’ve never watched any of the show except for this episode. But considering the entire premise is one giant psychic debunk, they really needed to tear psychic-chic apart. And that believer-chic coworker was terrible.
BCCW: “how do u KNOW shes not psychic??? LOL”
Main guy whatshisface: “Um… maybe because she is doing exactly what I used to be doing, the exact same way against the exact same type of people? Maybe?”
Agreed that psychic-chick didn’t do anything too magical or unexplainable, but she really needed to be exposed as fraud. That was a let down.
Oh, and I totally called the killer. The son and stepfather were too damned obvious - even if the son was that serial killer in Life.
I never feel as strongly about this stuff as so many of you do.
Their aim is *not *to debunk. Their aim is to entertain as many people as possible and keep the ratings up. Their hook is to debunk quite a bit, but they throw in a little doubt every now and then so as to keep the people who want to believe.
The hot red-head is there for that reason. To give the believers someone to empathize with. She so clearly needs to believe. I’m sure we’ll find out why at some point.
The non-believers can all root and cheer for Jayne.
It is a mediocre show that I like well enough to watch, but it isn’t supposed to be life-changing, or even a teaching mechanism. It is simply supposed to entertain.
If I recall correctly, van Pelt is also a strong Christian. That should make you guys happy - the strong Christian character in the show is the dummy who falls for all the snake oil.
But don’t most mainstream Christian religions believe that trying to contact the dead is evil and should be avoided? So no seances or Ouija boards, right?
I know this is what the Catholic Church says.
Maybe she’s a cafeteria Christian.
Okay, I’ve watched the episode now - I didn’t see anything that couldn’t be explained by a very good conwoman. I don’t think the show implied that any part of the woowoo stuff was real - as a non-conwoman type, I can easily think of explanations for all of it. At the end, I think Jayne was crying because the conwoman was horrible enough to attack him at his weak spot, the wife and daughter that were killed because of his arrogance.
