Overhead some white trash dickhead remark "I dont give a fuck about Puerto Rico. I wish all of them [assuming he means immigrants] were all down there!
Hey Genius, a couple things to think over:
– We INVADED Puerto Rico and took the island from Spain. They didn’t ASK us to be part of the USA— we took Puerto Rico and now this island is our responsibility.
–200,000 Puerto Ricans have served our country since then.
So what I am basically saying you racist dipshit is go fuck yourself, hope 5000 homeless Puerto Ricans are moved into YOUR trailer park, and pray that when a natural disaster hits you people that are different from you wont be as heartless.

Yeah, all because of the do-nothing Dummocrats who sat with their thumbs up their asses and let Puttarickens swarm across the border with their anchor babies. Thanks, Obama!
I suppose this isn’t the right forum, but is there any reason it can’t just be a state? 51 states, nothing wrong with that. They need their infrastructure fixed, let’s just do it right.
any chance of that?
shoot, we all need our infrastructure fixed, we are getting right on that I’m sure.
I don’t think it’s this so much. FEMA is there. We will end up paying for the restoration of the island after this, which will take months, or years. We’re already on the hook for money.
Considering that many major corporations in the US also pay little or no US income tax, I’m not sure that excluding PR on that basis is valid. I’d rather close the loopholes (if that can be done).
Adding PR as a state would increase Federal income tax revenue from residents, wouldn’t it?
Wow. You are just really not understanding my point.
I’ll try and be clear here: Many people do not want Puerto Rico to become a state because keeping it a Commonwealth allows Puerto Rico to have a different, and very attractive, tax scheme for the purpose of attracting and retaining moneyed interests who do not like paying taxes on their income.
A majority of Puerto Ricans are religious and are anti-abortion and anit-marriage-equality. But Republicans probably can’t handle having a bunch of people of color on their side. Or agreeing with their talking points while voting for Democrats anyway
Right after Blago got the boot, I read somewhere about how much money it’d cost the state to take his name off everything.
I’m kind of curious how much the various updates would cost at the federal level if we added a 51st state–I assume they run deeper than just the flag, but I can’t think of what all they’d be.
You are right. I missed that you were saying that US corporations/moneyed interests were using PR as their shelter, like Ireland, Belgium, etc. Thank you for clarifying.
Y’all do understand that Puerto Rico has been a US Commonwealth since 1898 and Puerto Ricans have been US citizens since that time, right? Unless you are under the impression that Republicans have been in control of the US Presidency and Congress continuously since that time, your reasoning is severely flawed.
The real reason is that, until fairly recently, Puerto Ricans did not want to become a US state. The first vote that favored statehood was in 2012 (when, ironically enough, Obama was President and Dems firmly controlled both houses of Congress) but there were irregularities in the vote (~500,000 blank ballots found). Oddness of one sort or another has plagued each vote since, so no clear consensus has been reached.
So if tomorrow a consensus were reached in Puerto Rico to seek to be the 51st state, are you telling me that you think the Republican-controlled Congress would jump to admit them?
