Yes. If Sinema becomes a Republican, she’s just one of 51. No glamour in that. They’d make much of her for a news cycle or two, and then her time in the spotlight would be over.
But if she holds out the possibility of voting with Democrats, then (she’d assume) she’d remain at the exciting center of attention.
It really is. I would not give someone like that a dollar and trust that they would have the sense to know how to get a McCafe special. There are homeless bums with more IQ points that this idiot.
It’s getting to the point where only fucking morons have the desire to run in this toxic political environment.
It’s not like the best and brightest are running the country. It’s the rapidly becoming only the ones who have some combination of: charisma, money and a desire to brawl in the mud. Intelligence optional (and in some districts, frowned upon).
If someone calls an AK-47 a machine gun, they are forever banned from ever speaking about any sort of gun control measure, since they don’t know what they are talking about, and cannot legislate from ignorance.
And yet, we have politicians saying extremely dumb things, indicating not just an ignorance of preferred terminology, but the basic concepts and ideas that they are representing, and they are given a pass.
I believe that Federal law defines any weapon that can fire fully automatically (which I believe is true of the AK-47(I believe it can do single shot, 3-round burst, full automatic?) is a machine gun. So if I’m discussing Federal regulation of firearms, that definition holds.
That the military (and people who closely follow military terminology) have a different, more specific definition does not make it the only correct one.
Manchin sucks, and yet the party and country are way, way better off with him then without him. His value-over-replacement-Senator is astronomical (to the Democrats). WV is about as red as states get, but we’ve got a Senator who votes for the Democratic party leader, and occasionally actually votes for Democratic priorities! That’s pretty major.
On the other hand, Sinema is pretty worthless. We could actually get a better Democrat in Arizona, unlike WV. Hopefully she’s primaried into oblivion and Gallego or someone like him replaces her.
The thing that pisses me off the most is that Schumer bends over backwards to give him exactly what he asked for, and he still nixes the deal. Although I’m not sure if I should be more upset with Manchin or Schumer at this point. Schumer hasn’t seemed to learn “fool me once… won’t get fooled again” yet when dealing with this assclown.
If Schumer hadn’t gone to such lengths to address Manchin’s concerns, then a credible narrative that it’s the Democratic leadership refusing to compromise could be constructed.
Letting Manchin essentially write the bill, and then watch as Manchin torpedoes it, at least lets it be shown who is the intransigent party here.
Would it have made a difference if Manchin had been shut out? The bill still wouldn’t have passed.
I’m not a huge fan of Schumer for a number of reasons, but I can’t really place the blame for this one on him.
