Yes, that’s a very strong show of support.
Eh, it’s not a denial either. I’m going with true.
This would be my guess - but to a person like Davis, it will always be ‘all about her’
Welp. Nice try Mr Pope. You almost had me liking you, but support for Kim Davis - who is not standing for religious liberty, but for discrimination and hate - reminded me just who you were again.
ETA: Seriously, he met with her? He met with this woman? There are about a gazillion Catholic supporters who love the Pope and he met this crazy lady? Disappoint.
I highly doubt the Pope knows anything about Davis. He probably just heard that there is some woman from Tennessee who is holding to her Christian values in the face of political pressure and said, “okay, sure.”
I’ve been trying to warn progressives off this pope’s PR campaign.
Confirmed by Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi.
How do you like your hat prepared?
Then he should probably appoint one of his cardinals to the office of Checking This Shit Out First.
I think the problem is that his cardinals are likely far less gay-friendly than he is.
Whoa. Hey hey hey! She’s from Kentucky. Don’t drag is Tennesseans into it, (although we do have a judge refusing to perform straight divorces because of gay marriage).
I don’t really see that as excusing him.
I don’t see why the Vatican would be refusing to comment if they had intended the meeting to be a show of support.
I’m guessing there was some degree of hornswoggling on Team Davis’ part.
shrug I’m not trying to. I’m just saying I doubt he had any personal involvement in the decision to meet with her. He can’t vet everything personally.
As I understand it, conscientious objection means you shouldn’t be forced to fight a war if your sincere belief is that fighting a war is wrong. I also believe that no one should be forced to be a county clerk if they have a conscientious objection to doing the job.
Kim Davis thought her request for support had been answered by a note reading “POPE: YES” but it turns out it was just a napkin from Popeyes.

She met with this guy
No, I know she didn’t meet with him… I know because I’m a Pope in his People’s Catholic Church. I still have the certificate he sent me, although it no longer hangs on the wall.

Confirmed by Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi.
How do you like your hat prepared?
Sorry, but I’m going to need more than this:
On Wednesday, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed the meeting, but he declined to elaborate. “I do not deny that the meeting took place, but I have no other comments to add,” he said.

Is it possible some anti-gay pro-Kim Davis bishop (or whatever) got her there, plunked her down along with a whole line of other special guests, and the pope blessed and prayed with them all, without actually knowing who the heck she was?
It could have been a group of people that Francis’ American team thought were living good, Christian lives, and the pope thanked them all for their courage, and asked them all to stay strong.
I tend to agree. If she actually came within sight of the Pope, something like you described is the most probably way it happened.
latest sound bite from Kim -

In the ABC interview, which aired Wednesday morning, Davis said knowing the pope agreed with her validates her efforts.

Would love to have an actual video of the meeting/conversation so we could
a) see just how disconnected Kim is
b) understand what the Pope really said.
Does the Pope do any meet and greet type things that basically anybody can get into? Meeting the Pope doesn’t seem far fetched, but having the Pope call you and sneak you in to a private meeting is a little too much.
The Vatican refusing to deny it just sounds to me like “Never heard of her but the Pope shook thousands of hands of people he didn’t know so we can’t say no.”
