I understand (and sympathize with) the desire to curb Microsoft’s monopoly powers. But from what I’ve read (and sorry if this was already debated to death several months ago), the split wasn’t a very good remedy for that. That is, it would result in two Microsoft’s: one that was still a monopoly and one that wasn’t. I read suggestions that a better remedy given the situation and the outlook for the future, would be to force MS to share its source code. I’m not suggesting that that’s likely this time around, but I wonder what others think.
