Without the barcode it would be easy to buy a product ask for a second receipt, because you need one for your records or such, and then a day later return the item while still receiving the rebate. At least if you get the barcode off the box, you usually can’t return said item.
Good old Staples office supply store screwed me out of a $40 rebate. I did all of the complicated set of instructions and mailed in all of the required items like upc code and register reciept etc. But about 6 weeks kater I got a letter from them saying that I had not fulfilled the rebate requirements and they were sorry (yeah right) but they could not send me the rebate, which was in the form of a store purchase certificate. I went to the store and asked the clerk if they could explain this and they said that they could not. I asked if they could help me and again the answer was “no”.
Now I know that Staples really wants to be fair to their customers (grin) so I decided to do them a favor and that was to help them be fair to me. So I went back to the store and shoplifted $42.84 worth of merchandise. Now I know that some will say that I actually stole $2.84 from them, however I spent 35 cents on postage which now brings the total down to $2.49.
Now this advertising for them is surely worth that. So now the way I have it figured is that Staples and I are even and both parties happy!

“I am not a crook”
my monitor fried out on me over thanksgiving. I couldn’t make it to the store(Best buy) on saturday, so I waited until sunday. Big mistake.
The monitor I bought had a $150 rebate on sunday, but if I had gotten there on saturday or friday, it would hve been $250. They wouldn’t have done this with the actual price of the monitor, but they can do it with rebates.
So I figure that’s another $400 on my Visa, forgetting it’s actually another $550 on my Visa towards my limit of $1200. I maxed out my credit card during December. That $150 that I was waiting for could have come in handy. And I’m still waiting for it…
Rebates are another thing we can blame Nixon for. When he froze prices in 1971[?] some products were frozen at a ‘sale’ price, much to the dismay of the companies involved. With rebates, they could charge full price, and send you money later. Much later.
And, yes, rebates actually do suck.
Zorch, I remember well the era of the wage - price freeze. There were so many things exempted from the price freeze, that the only thing that seemed to be froze to me was my wage.

Yeah!!!
What you all said.
No. I don’t think you stole $2.84. I think you stole $42.84.
It must be nice to be able to justify to yourself stealing, but I suppose being a thief you have your own code of honor
Thank you so much for making it possible for me to pay more for my merchandise,so you could get what was owed you.I love subsidizing shoplifters.
Contact Staples and tell them that I give you permission to claim my $40 rebate. Use it as you wish then we will all be happy.
And you were correct in stating " what was owed you". Absolutely it was owed me. I would not have made my purchase there if it was not for their rebate. Look at it this way Staples will reward you for all the others it has ripped off for rebates that never were by cutting prices. So you won’t have to subsidize anyone
Go ahead and keep justifying your thievery. When you take something without permission, it is stealing. If you had a problem, you could have talked to management, and if that didn’t resolve the issue you could have called the corporate office. But No, you had to take things into your own hands. You just don’t get it. You were wrong. I don’t care if you think they owed it to you, you had no right to leave the store with merchandise that didn’t belong to you.
