Not a big fan of Canadian banks. Pretty fucking steamed that they aren’t legally required to say what percentage of their billion dollar profits come from service fees that increase every six months.
Not a big fan of telemarketers calling during dinner. Don’t like it when celibate geek poster children use some fast talking pseudologic to persuade me to sign up for their dubious wares.
Not a big fan of cancer, either. It’s a terrible spectrum of diseases and I see the results of it at one level or another on most days. But the things I hate more than serious diseases are unprincipled yahoos offering false hope to patients through crackpot remedies and unfeeling corporate monoliths playing on people’s valid fears about getting sick to a serious disease.
I’m 28. My risk of cancer is pretty fucking low. If I were to get cancer, getting a small cash payment of a few thousand dollars would offer me little fucking solace. Cancer treatments are covered under our health care system although the waits to see specialists is long for cases thought to have a relatively benign prognosis.
So I get pretty pissed off when all the things I dislike are brought to the forefront. Was eating dinner last night when I get an urgent call from some pathetic schlub trying to scratch out a living in the name of CIBC VISA. Trying to sell me insurance to cover the expenses associated should I contract cancer “through no fault of my own” merely by requiring me to pay a measly 89 cents per month per outstanding $100 balance on my credit card statement. Generously offering to pay the first month free, whioch for me would add up to a savings of 89 cents. Having the goddamn nerve to tell me how unpleasant my life could become if I contracted cancer. Trying to sign me up without mentioning the value of the policy on the assurance I can cancel it during the first month (or thereafter) if I don’t like it once they send me further information.
WHat goddamn fucking cheek. I don’t like fucking companies trying to force things on me without giving me informatin at the best of fucking times. There was an uproar in this country when the big cable gurus tried to force everyone to sign up for deluxe cable and later opt out of it if they felt so inclined. These “opt out” policies are a disgrace to the consumer and should not be tolerated under the rule of law since they take advantage of those who are unaware of their rights which the company has every reason to hide or keep unpublicized.
This fucking gall is compounded by the fact a freaking bank is trying to sell cancer insurance to healthy people by playing on their worst fucking fears with a policy that is probably pretty useless. In a long list of shameful atrocities committed by Canadian banks, this has to be among the lowest forms of coercion I have witnessed in many years. And this forum is hardly the last place where I intend to complain about this fucking disgrace from these shameless, ass-licking, fucking corporate pirates. Or am I over-reacting?
