I have a very tolerant attitude toward what other people do but this story from Wired News definitely pushes my boundaries.

I’m no fan of PETA, in fact I can’t recall many issues in which they have been involved that did not make me roll my eyes in disbelief. This is one case where I fully support their efforts. I realize that there are much worse atrocities than this happening daily but I was sickened when I read this. There is no way in hell that I could watch that video! That sort of thing is demented, sick and wrong. I know that I can’t stop this sort of behavior but what is with the fascination some people find with watching this shit?
A hearty fuck you goes out to any sites that host this file. That sort of thing is just sick and wrong. What the fuck is wrong with these people?
I didn’t see the video, and perhaps I am slightly inaccurate for not doing so, but it would seem that many Hindus would have the same impression about beef-eaters in general, such as I.
What’s the difference between eating a cow and eating a cat? Cats aren’t considered pets by everyone. You’d be saying the same thing if turkeys, chickens, cows, goats, and pigs were cute n’ furry too. Don’t be such a hypocrite (forget what I’ve said if you’re a vegetarian).
Now as for those who part take in watching it? So what. Don’t like it, don’t watch it.
I like cats. And well… some people keep pigs as pets. OTOH, I’d think it was sick to host a file of a pig slaughter just for grins. Killing your food is fine, but harping over it is not.
Kinda reminds me of that bit in “Roger and Me” when the lady kills her rabbit. That’s just what they’re for. I’d prefer it didn’t happen, but then some people prefer I not eat burgers. What’re you gonna do?
Sounds like a cookery programme to me. I haven’t seen the video, but how is it different (apart from the ‘cute’ factor) from a film of, for example, a pig killing? My Hungarian girlfriend had to watch a film of one of these as part of her general state education.
I generally like cats, but if visiting a country where they were considered food I would probably try some if offered. The same goes for dogs, snakes, horses, ostriches, kangaroos etc.
I do draw the line at films of animals (or unwilling people for that matter) being tortured for the amusement or titilation of the internet community. Like I said, I haven’t seen the film, but the article doesn’t mention any gratuitous cruelty. In fact, hitting it over the head is probably more humane than the method generally used for killing chickens and pigs (cutting their throats and draining their blood into a bucket).
All in all, I’d have to agree with Stile (knowing nothing of him previously, and also not having watched the video). It sounds like a more graphic Asian version of Two Fat Ladies or some such.
stile has been around for quite some time, a sort of TMI blog. he searches and posts some pretty sick shit, but alot of interesting shit too. more than a few are too much for even me, but hey, he’s getting paid handsomely for doing it ( i stopped keeping up with him once he got advertising and when i got this job - ratings check forbids it and after spending 50 hours on the computer here, i don’t want to at home).
does the site still automatically refresh every 5 minutes? i hate that shit. reading way down to the end, flip to another browser, flip back, and what the hell am i doing back at the top of the fucking page!?!
You know, I realize that when you condense it down to a base level, that eating a cat or a rabbit or a pig or cow are all equivalent to some extent. I doubt the idea of someone eating a kitten will ever sit well with me, but I am not one to foist my personal views upon others. I can “live and let live” in that respect.
I think the reason that this bothered me so much is that I have had a friends kitten for ten days while she is out of town. I don’t particularly like cats but this little guy has really grown on me. Couple that with the fact that as I read the article in question I had this little kitten sleeping in my lap and you can begin to see where I was coming from in my OP. As I read the article I felt very defensive and frankly, it pissed me off.
I’m still pissed off, but I do not expect to change the world. I needed to vent and I did. Thanks for listening.
I think the problem with it is it’t not a cookery show. People don’t generally eat cats (I could be wrong but I don’t think there’s a cusine anywhere that commonly includes cats). And I just don’t think he did it because he suddenly had a hankering for kittykabobs. I think he did it to make a movie that would shock and disgust people.
Is that different? Well, the reasons for doing it don’t mean much to the animal in question. I’m sure the animals being killed for “legitamite” perposes are equal pissed off about it. But it does rather seem more depraved to me.
Well, if this thread proves nothing else, it at least seems to prove that the majority of Dopers are not irrational idiots, and are able to see that killing a cow for food is essentially no different from doing the same thing to a cat (except you don’t get as much food from the tabby :)).
I’m a cat-loving vegetarian, but i have no problem with meat -eaters at all, and i don’t preach to them. The only ones that piss me off are the hypocrites who get all weepy when a fuzzy, cute animal dies, but who do so while chomping into a burger or a serving of bacon and eggs.
Oh, and i also get pissed off at people who imply that all vegetarians and animal-lovers are supporters of PETA’s tactics.
So as I’m at home and curious, I downloaded and watched the video - it’s about 30 seconds long, and seems to be part of a documentary on preparing cats as food. betenoir, I believe this Stile guy found the video somewhere on the net and now hosts it on his site, which is overflowing with hardcore porn and other ‘shocking’ fare.
Anyway, the verdict: The video itself is nothing to get up in arms about, and the site owner is one of those ‘Look how shocking and outrageous I am!’ types. It’s been done. Were he a board member, I’d say DNFTT.
